On interviewing future sons-in-law...............

I may have told this before hereabouts. If so, please forebear......

This is a true story told to me by a friend.

He was stationed in Mobile with the Air Force, this in the 'Fifties. And he began dating a very attractive young local girl, from a very proper Southern family. Now this young man was from Tupelo, Mississippi.

The girl's father did not like his daughter's dating a serviceman, but the romance seemed to be getting rather serious. So the father determined that he would drive up to Tupelo and interview someone there about the character of the boy friend.

He did this, making the drive to Tupelo. Arriving in town, he stopped at a local drug store. There was a lady clerk there and he asked if she knew this young man, and if so, what could she tell him. The lady at the drug store did know the young man in question, and she answered every question asked honestly and very frankly. All responses were highly favorable, and the father left satisfied. The lady was mystified about the investigation.

Only at the wedding of the couple some time later did the man discover the groom's mother was the lady he had quizzed at the drugstore!

On interviewing future sons-in-law (I have two daughters), the very first thing I did was to make sure that I was cleaning my 8-3/8" S&W Model 29 .44 Magnum on the kitchen table as they entered the house...………. :shock:

On each occasion, the beau's eyes immediately got as big as saucers, followed by an audible "gulp".

I followed that up with the statement that "In this family, we ALWAYS take care of our children" (while brandishing the S&W, of course)


Both my daughter's status' are: happily married for 15 years each, with Grandsons from both.

Given the above, I'd say my interview method had merit...……….. :mrgreen:

I didn't find out a darned thing about my prospective SIL except he was in the Iowa NG and the marriage was planned for soon after his return from the current(at that time) deployment.
I think Daughter was tired of me "scaring off" her suitors and a combat veteran wouldn't be so intimidated. Nope, he was still intimidated but wasn't going to give up as easily.

On the other hand, you can look a SIL in the eye and tell him to shape up or you'll boot his butt. Try THAT with a DIL.

A local family are long time customers of mine and the one female was telling that in high school she rarely dated and if she did it was only one date. She started to feel that she was unattractive until she found out that all her brother(burly guys and tough as nails) would would be waiting at the house for the guy to show up and tell prospective suitors "Hey you SOB, you better not mess around with our sister or.....". Word got out.

I guess that's one way to look at it. Another is with a daughter the guy comes to the house and you have the chance to "appraise" him. With a son... unless you have a daughter that checks her out you don't know anything about her until he's engaged.

One of my best friends, a retired Marine Gunnery Sgt.... has 5 daughters... when ever one of the daughters would bring a guy home to meet her father... at some point in the 'interview' he would take the young man aside and put his arm around him and quietly tell him to keep one thing in mind ,

"son, anything you do to my daughter... I will do to you."
