older mini- 14

MidwayUsa usually has the side attach mount for quite a few older mini 14's

I trust you have a standard model so this is the method to mount optics. The panel that covers the Bolt Lock Assembly must be removed and the mount attaches at that location. See attached.

I have a side mount made by B-square. May be the brand, but I really do not like the side mount. This one loosen frequently, even with a lock tight liquid. I mounted a Leopold on it and it was so far out of align I could not site the rifle in at 100 yards. I worked on it all day, and could not do it...even with shims. I took it to a gun shop, and they tried to align it with a laser, no good. I was able to site in a short red-dot scope later, but I plan to dump the side mount altogether and have proper mounts installed.

I used to have one too, and had same issue with mount, never happy. Choice is to put a good rear peep sight on it, or go with a forward mounting rail system that replaces the handguard.

Ruger is now offering these on Shop Ruger, and I've ordered one for a folding stock Mini-14 directly from the manufacturer.

Saw a photo of a Mini with the Ultimak mount assembled to it on this site and was impressed, however, Amega makes one for the side swivel folding stock.

One warning, is that without the buffer system in the older pre-Ranch Mini's they have been known to "eat" scopes.

The folder I've got is a Ranch version and going to mount a Eotech on it eventuallly.

Mine shot two distinct groups with the side mount, about 2-2.25" apart. I finally changed it out for a newer Ranch Rifle. Problem solved. Jack
