Old model single six

22 magnum 1967 according to the list

It's not a "magnum only". Those all have 3XXXXX serial numbers. Ruger's charts are messed up.

It could be either a 1967 .22LR only or a 1967 .22LR/.22magnum convertible.

All the rest of those guns starting with 409921 on Ruger's chart are either .22LR only guns or .22LR/.22magnum guns.

Info from RENE Reference of Ruger Firearms, Volume 1.

I am guessing it has a 6.5" barrel which would make it a RSSM and an RSSM would be considered a magnum gun would it not? As the primary cylinder is the magnum and the extra is a 22LR
Info John Dougan's book page 179

Thanks to all. It is a 6.5" but this one has only a lr cylinder. If there was a mag cylinderit is not with it. From an estate sale and not in good shape. I noticed that the grip frame did not fit the steel main frame like it should. I pulled the grips off and the grip frame is a -red frame. That is a new model grip frame isn't it? This gun (now in my possession) is an unconverted old model.

When the magnum only guns were introduced they all had 6-1/2" barrels and were the first guns with that barrel length, noted as the RSSM catalog number. When Ruger decided to offer the convertibles, they were in all lengths such as RSS4, RSS5, etc, but Ruger decided to stay with the RSSM number for the 6-1/2" guns.

It is common practice to refer to the 3XXXXX guns as the "magnum guns" and the convertibles as, well, "convertibles" with the knowledge that they are "magnum capable". It's all just a matter of the semantics involved in how the dedicated Rugerphiles refer to the various models.

Louie, you may or may not have a convertible. Only a factory letter would decide that. The XR3-RED grip frame is correct for your gun, but some do not fit well. That said, it's still an Old Model. Thanks for sharing with us.

You have a nice shooter there. Ale-8(1) has given you good info. You can contact Ruger records,,, if you wish,,, spending the $10 to find out if it shipped as a convertible or not, as he has stated.

If you want to half ass it you call all convertibles well convertibles. You could call all Rugers well just guns.  How ever if what you have letters as a RSSMX that it is in fact a 22magnum convertible. And that is what it's SR# comes back as no matter what book you look in.

And if you want to be NOT half-ass about it, only the true "magnum guns" in the 3XXXXX series are marked "RUGER SINGLE-SIX WIN .22 RF MAG. CAL." on the left side of the frame, while the subsequent convertibles are marked "RUGER .22 CAL. SINGLE-SIX". And to further confuse the matter, there were in fact some very few convertibles in the 3XXXXX range that carry the RSSMX catalog number. All of this is some of what makes Ruger collecting fun, and discussions like this possible.

Right all them guns that left the factory in RSSMX boxes are fake magnums

Nope . . . because after the 3XXXXX guns were finished, the RSSM or RSSMX or RSSMW catalog numbers referred to the ongoing "normal" Single-Sixes, convertibles and non-convertibles alike, with 6-1/2" barrels.
