I have just received my new Tom Threepersons holster from El Paso Saddlery and I'm somewhat disappointed with it. This for a .44 Special New Model Flat Top. Two issues:

1)The holster is too snug. I lift the gun maybe three inches before it "breaks" free. I'm assuming this will loosen up with wear?

2) The forward cant seems too much. The holster sits on my belt with near 30 degrees cant. I flex my wrist enough to grip the gun with my thumb on the hammer spur.

Anybody else experience these problems with El Paso/Tom Threepersons?

Curious as to which Ruger you ordered for, as their selections don't show anything for the Flat Top. Only a BH or a New Vaquero.

I have BH model & one for SAA. My NMFTBH is very - too tight in the SAA holster IMO, the Rugers ejector rod housing being the culprit with this combo. THE NMFT is loose, nearly to disappointment in my holster for a NMBH.

The NM Vaquero is the only other offer in their list. I feared it might be tight, but that seems like thee only other option.

I bet you're right about the holster loosing up over time. But the cant won't change. Can you return it? That's too bad about you not liking it right away. Is this the holster you posted about a week ago or so?

Yes, Sir, it is.

As to what gun it was for, I specified, and it is printed on my receipt, that the holster was for the mid size frame New Model Blackhawk Flat Top.

I had to accept it with that thong as they could not make a holster without either the thong or strap. Their lawyers specification, I reckon. I have removed that thong as soon as I got the holster.

I think the forward cant is standard on the Threepersons but neutral cant is an option when ordering. I have several EPS holsters and have always liked them but the last one was significantly thinner leather than previous holsters.

Most of my holsters have the forward cant, but they are around 15 degrees or so. This one is near 30 degrees. When I grasp my gun butt I cannot get my thumb on the hammer spur.

How did they stamp the back as to model ?

The angle is not indicated there, but if they sent you a holster for the wrong model your conversation is with them.

Is it meant to be worn further back? The farther back I reach the more can’t I can tolerate.

El Paso does not specify the position it is to be worn. But the original Tom Threepersons holster was worn pretty much straight away on the right side.

The catalog illustration does not indicate it is such a severe forward cant. As I say it is near 30 degrees. When I grasp the gun butt my thumb does not reach the hammer spur.

That's the thing about ordering. I have a few level 2 paddle holsters but I generally make my own. That way I can't complain about the moron who made them

Bob,
What I have done in the past to get a gun to fit better in the holster. Put your shooter in a large zip lock bag, don't need to seal the bag, soak the holster in water, stuff the gun in the holster and let dry.
It works for me.

Have you ever tried a cross draw holster. They have a lot of advantages over a strong side holster. They can be a faster draw and more comfortable when sitting. IMHO
