No1-S ?

Whats the history on the 1-S? What calibers etc.? Was the one on GB in 7mag for $605 a deal and slip thru the cracks? Or are they more common than what I'm thinking? It had an aftermarket pad but was pretty nice otherwise. Am I correct that they are all with sights and 26" barrels?

The No. 1-S in 45-70 and 9.3x74R have 22" barrels with sights.

There are a few non cataloged #1 "S" rifles floating around that are factory original but are quite/very rare I know of at least one 25-06 and a 270 Win that letter. There are also some floating around that WON"T letter that were made up out of barreled actions against factory policy.

Probably the most common are the 45-70 and the 7mm Mag. $600 is a good price for most #1s but it's a down market right now.

Most guys that "Need" a 7mm Mag "S" bought one long ago.

Not sure which rifle on GB you're referring to, but the one in 7 Mag that I saw recently had had it's buttstock cut for a limbsaver pad, so it was immediately uninteresting to me, even at $600.

In 10-15 years of fairly intensive involvement in #1s -- incuding gunshow and inet shopping, and membership in several fanatic collectors groups -- this may be the first 7mm S I have seen. That does not mean that there are not quite a few out there somewhere, only that I do not see any. Does anyopne know how many were made --even a ballpark estimate?

I would thank the guy who added a real recoil pad as long as the LOP was the same. Shooting magnums for fun is not on my dance card anymore.

I have a 1S in .330 WM but then who doesn't. I also have one in .35 Whelen, converted from a 218B which, in turn, was converted from a .45-70 with a bulged barrel by previous owners.

My experience has been that the 7 Mag is about the second or third most common 1S, if you count the 45-70, which I don't, really, with it's 22" barrel.
I have seen quite a few on the auction sites on a fairly regualr basis, but they are usually later production and often with the black pad (good if you value the Ruger barrels). I have not, however, seen many in gunshops or at gunshows over the years. Not sure why. The 1S is one of the harder variations to find on a regular basis, either due to production numbers or the fact that their owners tend to hold onto them (like me).
Cutting any No. 1 stock ruins the rifle for me, and unfortuantely, very few seem to be executed well. When I shoot any of my magnums, it's usually with reduced loads anyway, so the OEM recoil pad is not an issue

Well thanks to everyone for the info and opinions. I am actually the new owner of the one listed on gb.

Until reading the posts here , the shortened stock had slipped by my eye. I went back and studied the pictures again and it looks to be well done to me. It doesnt bother me too bad that its been cut. It would be nice if it wasnt but the rifle is going to be put to good use so its not much of an issue.

Im happy with what I paid. At $600 and with todays asking prices it isnt much more than one would pay for an action or barreled action imo. I dont know where some of you are finding these deals on no.1's but this is cheaper than I personally have seen and found in years.

I think its going to look good when I get my like new 1967 blued steel Weaver K-6F mounted!

sure wouldnt bother me that it was cut as long as the lop still fit me properly with the new pad. My thoughts are your getting a better pad and most #1 rifles will never be collectors items in our lifetime and surely not a 7mag if any. What it is is a dammed good hunting rifle. I chuckle sometimes at guys flipping over backwards to insure a 77 or #1 or a ruger revolver is all original. When you see prices of used rugers 3 times what a new gun cost then theres collectors value but most rugers guys collect can be bought for the price of a new gun or less. You arent going to get rich doing that. A ruger to me is a shooting iron nothing more nothing less.

I agree. I just bought my second #1 this past weekend and I paid more for the two I have. In my area #1's are not common in any configuration and when I do see them they are priced more than you paid.

I think its going to look good when I get my like new 1967 blued steel Weaver K-6F mounted!

I would like to see a photo once you mount that Weaver.

It was somewhat of an impulse buy! I hate it when I'm rifle shopping for a scope I have lying around! I found the K-6 at a show years ago and the bluing was like new. Hard to find them in that shape anymore. I got it dirt cheap because the lenses weren't all that great and it was dirty inside from leaking seals. I sent it to Weaver Repair when Frank still did them in El Paso and he refurbished and recalibrated it for me and now its as new! He was the one who told me it was a 67 vintage too. Same born on date as me...

The K6 is a good fit for any 1S. Enjoy your 1S.
Just as an aside, this is not the one I saw recently that also had a Limbsaver added to a shortened stock. I can't remember what site it was on or whether it was on an auction site or the classifieds section of a gun forum.

Well I picked up the No.1 yesterday. No suprises. It was just as advertised and maybe in a touch better shape than described. Always a good thing! It did not have rings which was no big deal since I have a box full of them. But...digging around this morning and wouldn't you know it...no matched set in blued for a No.1! Got piles of stainless rings but inventory in blued is a bit low. I put a wtt ad in the classifieds. I used a stainless set to test fit my K-6 but couldn't bring myself to leave it like that!

The one thing that did suprise me was the barrel. I figured it would be a lighter taper but this thing is stout!! The metal is in great shape and the wood is pretty nice too. A few small pressure dents but no cracks or dings that go through the finish.

As for the stock being cut...it has been shortened by about 3/4". The pad on it is just shy of 1" thick. I am thinking a little nicer pad around 1" or 1 1/8" would bring things right where they need to be for me using the K-6 and the scope would sit centered in the rings and right where it needs to be over the rib and rear sight. Pics will follow when I get the rings I need and the scope mounted.

Deer season is a long ways away...might need to take it to the dog town his spring and see what it'll do!!

My first #1 was a 1B 7 Mag. It got me hooked on the platform and was very accurate with the right loads. Last year I picked up a 1S from a person walking by at the gunshow. It has the factory black pad and shoots so well that I sold the 1B. I paid $550 for it in pristine condition with rings but no scope or box. It is going no where and to this day is my most accurate #1 period. I think you did okay for a shooter and think you will enjoy it. The felt recoil, to me, is no real biggie as I am not particularily recoil sensitive. Have fun and good luck!

I had a 1B in 7mag too Dave. Sold it a couple years back before I had ever shot it. Found out from the friend that bought it that it is a heck of a shooter!

Recoil isn't an issue for me either. I don't consider the 7mag to be in the heavy recoiling catagory. I have a 77 MkII RS that I run pretty stout 175 grain loads through and it is scary accurate and I'm hoping the No1 shoots them as well.

I like the 160-162 gr loads using accubond or partitions. They work great for bigger deer and elk. Let us know how it shoots for you!
