Hello all my name is Robert and I bought my first Ruger firearm today.

It's a plain jane LCP. I wanted something to pocket carry and serve as a back up to my regular carry guns.

I just got it home from my local academy sports and took it out back to test it out and....click. no bang.

I field stripped the pistol and noticed that the hammer will not go forward to strike the firing pin. The hammer in stuck in the rearward position. I've got an RMA with Ruger already and I was delighted at their customer service but I just can't get this bad first taste out of my mouth. Has anyone ever encountered this before? The CS rep said they could have it back to me in 7 business days but I am wondering if maybe an internal spring slipped off the disconector or something simple.

I've got a fair amount of experience in at home firearm repairs I just need to be pointed in the right direction or be told if it's best to just let Ruger fix it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I want to love this little gun but this is making it very hard to trust it.

Ask your retailer to exchange it. If you’re stuck with it yes, send back to the mothership. Once it works then you can decide about selling or trading it.

That's what I needed to hear I suppose. My retailer will only return to Ruger they won't do an exchange unfortunately. This is a sad situation as I love the way this gun disappears in my pocket. And I guess 7 days isn't too long to wait to have it "done right", considering I may need to rely on it to protect myself and my family one day

S4s4u, I think I will too. Their customer service seems to be 100%. Infact, I don't recall having a more positive experience with CS in the past with anyone.

And I do understand these can be tricky to hit stuff given their tiny size, a trade off for them being so concealable I guess. I look forward to practicing with it... In the accuracy department it can't be as bad as my Beretta 950 Jetfire haha nothing is that bad haha.

I appreciate you guys for chiming in and giving me the advice I couldn't give myself...the tinkerer in me almost got the best of the situation but I will follow the advice given and ship it back tomorrow morning!

On the Ruger Forum people end up assuming that the only company that have problems are Rugers.
I just had to take an S&W into a gun smith as opposed to sending it back to Smith, because a spring came off the pin that held the trigger group in place according to the Smith. It happens, with everything. I will put the gun through its paces and if it performs I'm good with it.
I assume the LCP was purchased due to a reputation due to the thousands of of LCP's that have been sold. Actually it’s hundreds of thousands. Typically the situation.

Ruger, for sure, isn't the only company with problems. I have two Charter Arms revolvers. Both have been back to the shop for repairs. Right now my new, never fired, LCP Max, is back at the Ruger "doctors office". I have LOTS of Ruger firearms. This is the only one that truly was messed up from the factory.

IMO and significant experience, you can't beat Ruger's CS and Non-Warranty Warranty. Call Ruger, they will immediately send you a free shipping label and within about 7 working days or less you will have a working LCP, perhaps a different one. I never hesitate to buy a used Ruger. Having said all this, I have 6 Glocks and I don't know if Glock has CS or not :)

Three years ago I bought a new LCP. It wouldn’t extract the empty cartridges. Sent it back to Ruger. They said they replaced the barrel and slide, but it still wouldnt function. Started to think they really hadn’t replaced anything. So, I ordered a new extractor and extractor spring and installed them myself. It’s functioned flawlessly ever since. I carry it every day.

Let Ruger fix it. The Mayodan NC folks are great to deal with. You say LCP, or was it a LCP II? I have sold many LCPs and LCP II. Only sent one back. The LCP II 22 rf were troublesome at first, but not that problem.

It was the LCP 1st model "second generation" I guess some would say. I bought this model because I felt for a pocket carry the long trigger pull would be safer and overall it was an ounce ish lighter. For my application I needed the smallest 380 I could find from a respectful company.

Well, I shipped it out with the Ruger provided label yesterday and unfortunately the holiday will push out its arrival a day or two. While I'm disappointed in the firearm itself I'm satisfied with their customer service. Hopefully they get it back to me soon! I just picked up 200rds of sig sauer elite ball 100 grain .380 and I'm itching to try it.

Kash those definitely sound like worthy upgrades. Does the hogue grip add a significant amount of width to the grip? Also, is pins walking a common issue on these LCP pistols?

I checked in with Ruger CS and my LCP will be on its way back this afternoon or on the morning! They replaced the trigger bar. The one on mine was apparently pretty far out of spec. They fired 30 rounds of pmc bronze with zero malfunctions. We will see if that really did cure it when I get it back.

I just paid 77 bucks for a shipping label from Ruger.

How did that come about, that's insanity!

77 bucks sounds about right for overnight FedEx/UPS.

I think the reason for any charge was that he broke his own gun, so they didn't feel compelled to pay for the return 🤷‍♂️

Ohhhhhh I see. I'm assuming any home-gunsmithing/installation of aftermarket parts could result in an outcome like this?

Oof...and I forgot handguns have to be shipped 2 day..

The factory tends to frown on any modifications made to their products and, at best, will remove any aftermarket parts and replace them with OEM parts if you send in an altered firearm.

Well that new trigger bar certainly did the trick! I put a box thru it earlier with zero issues. It sure is a snappy little bastard. I'll be doing some actual testing/shooting on Friday when I have more time to put more rounds down range.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and comments....Ruger took good care of me but hopefully that'll be the last time I ever need their customer service!

Well gents .... 300 rounds later I have had absolutely zero malfunctions with the factory gun and mag plus an extra mag I purchased. One mag is Italian and one made in USA.

Ammo included sig 100 grain fmj, Winchester wwb, Tula 95 grain, Remington 88 grain jhp and Remington fmj. It even loved the steel case.

I love reliability and I love this pistol. Id say they definitely got it fixed properly.

The Security 9 is great. Put a few clips through it today and it has a very crisp, clean powerful feel to it. It's smaller than the P95, but it is a very strong, very sharp and a cool weapon.
Thanks, you guys for your help and support.

What are you shooting? Snappy is not good in a close quarters SD gun.
It's the Ruger LCP, definitely "snappy" especially with the 100 grain sig loadings but definitely controllable. Accuracy was acceptable for a close range pistol. Honestly it's far tamer in recoil than my CZ82 and 83 pistols of anyone has shot those.

It wasn't sent overnight and they hadn't examined it to see how it broke before they charged me 77 bucks.
