New Type Of Auto Racing

Just had a thought. Would anyone go to see a driverless auto race. With all the new technology it would be possible to race cars without drivers. What would be the point, to see who could come up with the best software? :D

Believe it or not some things are still about people, not the machinery. Racing is one such. I hope it stays that way, or the human species will be extinct in a couple hundred years. Might be anyway, but I sure don't want to hand the planet over to a bunch of damn robots. :evil: :evil:

Well, Having driven a true Sports Car although NOT racing; I can tell you that handling of the auto is based to a large extent on the physical forces exerted on the body of the driver allowing you to determine when it is losing traction, how to correct that slippage and how to bring it straight again.
Should I mention the down sloping curved on ramps onto SoCal Freeways ?
Into the Right hand lane in a 4 wheel drift, working the gas peddle and "twerking" the steering wheel to fly straight down the lane and never crossing into the next lane. ( Yeah, I was a lot younger in those days)

Driverless cars can now race on tracks. It's not R/C. :D

No doubt that these cars can be designed to 'race' on any surface anywhere but that will not make them enjoyable for the 'average joe' to watch. Shucks, you can race mice or frogs but you don't get too much of a" fan base". :lol:

My first car in high school was also a '57 - TR3. I use to beat, with ease, those MG's and Sprites and Alfa Romeos around a road coarse set up where they were going to build a sub-division. We didn't race but went around the coarse for time. Loved the crank starter. :D

'69 Alfa Romeo 1750 CC Spyder, Mechanical Injection, 5 speed gear box and 4 wheel disc brakes; ALWAYS worried about the moron behind me in a Detroit sled stopping in time. 80+ in third gear.

I had a '64 TR4 that took me through college and in to my first job.
Not a bad car if you liked British electrics and replacing the timing chain tensioner every 6 months.
But I did look cool in it.

To the OP - I suppose driverless racing might have a small 'geek' following, but most racing has everything to do with the driver 1st, the team 2nd... I think it would be a very small marketplace!

The only type of auto racing I really found entertaining was the Figure 8 track with the vehicles pulling trailers. LOTS of trailers ended up as kindling and scrap aluminum.
