I am new to reloading...i have a ruger sr9c that i have loaded 115gr hp using 4.9gr of hp-38 powder, they were fine. I now am trying to load some 124 grain rn berrys bullets using the hp-38 and using hodgdons max load of 4.4 grains my sr9c wont cycle enough to eject empty. what am I doing wrong?

I looked in my Lyman manual and it did not list any 124 grn loads for HP38, neither did my Speer manual. I looked in my Hogdgon manual #25 and it showed max load of HP38 124 grn as 4.8 grains. I have no idea why they lowered the max charge.

You may want to use a different powder.

Is this a new gun? My boy's Walther CCP was really picky the first 200 rounds or so. It would only shoot specific brand of 115g FMJ consistently. After the break in, it has shot half a dozen different brands and also 124g ammo.

Edit: Berry's says you can load Berry's 9mm 124g RN bullets to 1250 fps.

Under 'loading tips' tab:

https://www.berrysmfg.com/product/bp-9mm-356-124gr-rn

And yet, hodgdon does show max 4.4g load (1037fps) for 124g BERB HBRN TP bullet (only 124g bullet that came up):

the gun is not new... i bought it new in 2011 and probably has 500 rds thru it...thanx for the Berrys info, I will check that out.

My Hodgdon manual shows loads for 124 gr BERB with W231 and Hp-38 data. I would up the charged a bit, checking for pressure signs, and shoot in a thoroughly cleaned gun.....

cleaned the chamber well and loaded 10 rounds with 4.4gr of hp38, ran flawlessly with the 124 berry bullets..

thanx for the responses

Actually, every manual will say that starting light and working up is the safe way to develop a load.
