I hear that Medicare will start mailing out new cards in April. There will be a new id number in place of your social security number on the card. I never did like that my SS number was on that card. I'll bet that none of you even carry your Social Security card in your wallet. Mine is in a safe deposit box at the bank. Of course that number is tattooed on my brain as is my military service number. I will never forget those two numbers.

I never had to carry that Medicare card because I had Kaisers supplemental Medicare thing. So all I have to carry is my Kaiser card which has a Kaiser number but no SS number on it.

Anybody that receives a new Medicare card please give a shout out. I'd like to hear when they actually start mailing them out. I hear that they will be mailing by regions of the country.

I never quite got comfortable with a SS# being required by the IRS on tax forms and on the checks for estimates, etc...especially estimates...the check has all the info plus they want the ss# on the face of the check..

Haven't seen my new card. I do have a question. Does anyone laminate their card? It doesn't hold up all that well. I don't have my social security card, and haven't had one for years. Been thinking about getting another one. No problem remembering it, but I guess we are supposed to have it for somethings. What about laminating your social security card? Is that an issue. I've heard it is, but not sure why it would be.

I didn't laminate my medicare card. There was no reason for me to carry it around in my wallet so there was no need. If you have a supplemental program on Medicare you won't need the medicare card. Never laminated my SS card either. I haven't even seen it in over 25 years. I know it's in my safe deposit box. Never needed it.

I don't know about Medicare cards, but you are not supposed to laminate your Social Security card. I had an employer reject my 40 year old laminated card. When I checked on the Social Security website, I was surprised to see that information was true.

I have carried my SS card in my billfold since I got it in 1954. I do not know my number, and its a point of pride that I don't know it. Some times it slows down some activity, but to me its a small price to pay for my little rebellion to the system.

Thanks

Mike

We received a phone call a few weeks back and they told me I would have to send in $25.00 for mine and 25.00 for the wife, by postal money order. I told them just to drop by and I'd give them cash they never came by and we haven't received our new cards. Guess we'll just have to keep our old ones. Doesn't matter though I just received a call from overseas some where there is fifty pounds of gold form me all I have to do is pay shipping.

I hope you have your wallet chained to your belt. The wrong people could do some damage with all your ID and your SS number in that wallet. Not a real good idea. Why do you think they finally took the SS number off the Medicare cards? Because it wasn't a good idea to have it on a card that people might carry in their wallet.

I laminated mine and the wife's when we got them. It's fine and it's legal. They hold up well.

Hi,

Had the same experience, and when I went to the SS office for a new one, the lady fed my old laminated card to the shredder before even noting the number, an act which turned a simple visit into an unpleasant experience mach schnell. FWIW, it was common practice to laminate them when I did mine (early '60s?), so I wonder if it was actually ok then, but people now are simply applying new rules to old situations?

Caryc- - While I do not have any chain on my billfold, rest assured that it is well protected.
Thank you for your concern.

Thanks

Mike

I wasn't thinking so much about theft as I was loss.

It also says on the SS card, "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION".
Hasnt stopped anyone, especially gummint.

I've been asked numerous times for my SS Card.. Especially at the DMV.. I was told it was mandatory.. When I inquired with the surly woman behind the desk why it was required of us, but not illegals who get a license without it, she just looked at me and didn't say a freaking word.. Yeah right.. And they say "we" have white privilege?
