I stopped in my LGS Friday on my way home from work and couldn't decide between the GP100 22LR 5 1/2" or the S&W 617 6". Both are excellent looking full sized revolvers. I have a S&W 686 K frame so I'm familiar with that and also have several other Ruger handguns including SP 101's and numerous SR semi auto's. I ended up walking out with the Ruger and not because it was $60 less. I just liked the look and feel of the Ruger better plus the fiber optic front sight. Looking forward to getting to the range later this week!

Thinking along the same lines myself- can't decide between the S&W or Ruger GP100. Have larger versions of both in other calibers. S&W has a better single action, but there is something about the GP100 that keeps me coming back. Maybe the 4" and 6" 357s that I also have!

I like the full barrel lug on the 617 but the barrel on the GP 100 5 1/2" is pretty heavy and feels nicely balanced so I went with the Ruger. Maybe I'll pick up a 4" 617 down the road.
