I purchased it NEW from a Ruger dealer at a gunshow yesterday. It's a beautiful (lol) All Weather Camo stocked version. Now mind you, it was disassembled in the box and it went together fine on my first assembly. I followed the directions and removed the bolt again to add a little lube on the contact surfaces but when I went to re install it it goes up and hits against the rear of the channel on the lug. I didn't force it, but I just kept tapping back and forth to see where it was hitting and it was definitely at the very front part of the bolt. I could see a little mark where it was hitting. I was able to eventually get it to wiggle just enough to get it back in. Is this normal or just so tight tolerances that it is that close? I'm almost afraid to remove it in fear that I wont get it back in. I thought about the bolt shims maybe taking some of that slop out and allowing it to feed into that opening better too? Or perhaps polishing that edge a little?

I am a retired toolmaker and gunsmith. Recently, Michigan made it legal to use pistol caliber carbines for hunting in the southern lower part of the state. The Ruger 77/44 and 77/357 are very popular in this area for deer hunting.
As a result, I have had several 77/44 rifles come into my shop for the problem you describe. The issue is that the bolt face is hitting the back of the ejector which is part of the magazine. There is a secondary ejector behind it on the trigger assembly. Check to see if the bolt face is hitting either of these. In all of the cases that I have seen, the bolt face was hitting the back of the metal insert in the magazine. Taking a bit of material off on the back edge of this metal insert was the solution to the problem.
The magazines themselves have been problematic with these models. Some of the molded parts have excessive flash on them and this includes the metal insert in the magazine. I have been disassembling the mags,removing any flash and treating the parts of the magazine with Armor All. I hope this helps to solve your issue. ------ GeezerD

How about removing the magazine from the gun during the reinstallation of the bolt?

It wasn't the magazine because it did it with the mag out. It was hitting on the channel that the bolt lug rides in. I took the action out of the stock and it still did it, but then I could see exactly where it was hitting. It had a little spot it was hitting but I could get it to wiggle in once I saw what it was doing. So, after several times taking it out and wiggling it in, it goes fairly smoothly now. It must not have been much stopping it, but seems ok now. My bolt is awful sloppy and thinking about a shim kit to just take up some of that slop. I haven't even shot for accuracy yet, but I read that putting a shim in seems to make the accuracy better for most. It's a 100 yard gun for me, so 3-4" at 100 yds will suffice for my needs! Thanks for the ideas.

I can think of a few stuck bolts that I could have used a hammer on instead of my heel and some that I have used a rubber hammer on. :mrgreen:
