I drove 4.5 hrs in cold rain and snow to check out a blued 4 inch security six in the local classified section today. I'm glad I did! It turns out it is a 1972 model #150-0180x. The pistol is immaculate. It also came with a beautiful leather holster marked "Hunter" which appears to be brand new as well. $300.00 plus about 20.00 in gas in my little commuter car. I will post photos tomorrow. What is the value of the revolver without papers or a box?

Seems like the price of a decent shooter-grade is hovering around the $350 figure.
So, finding a really nice low-back is a bonus. I'd like to see a picture. 8)

It would look really good in a box like this...

WAYNO.

That is a nice box! Is it for sale? Looks as though it is cast. It has an "S" under the Sturm Ruger label. What is the purpose of this?

Please take a look at the hollow in the extractor shroud and tell me which of these types it is:

Nice gun at a good price, by the way.

Hey WAYNO, want to sell your empty white box?

What is the difference? I looked at my lowback and saw it's forged.

Arguably, there's probably not much difference, functionally. A forged product is usually considered as stronger, but what's the difference between a strength factor 10 or 11? A cast frame may be easier to machine, too, but that's not even always the case.

Collectors of these "Sixes" just need to cover all the bases in their collections. Keeps us poor.

WAYNO.

That's really interesting that it has that "S" there. My first guess would be that the gun was sold as a factory Second, which would be pretty common for the serial number range as the guns sent to writers for evaluation were in the 3 and low-4 digit SN range. But on further examination, it does not appear that the barrel has the circle-SR proof mark as can be seen on the lower image in my example above. So it may be that they used the wrong stamp or couldn't find the right stamp when proofing that one. The "S" for a Second is generally found on the butt next to the serial number, but the Security Six was new territory for Ruger at the time and they may not have settled into a pattern at this point.

I was curious about the cast barrel (the shroud is integral with the barrel) because I am trying to identify the turning point for when they went from the early (cast) barrels to the forged barrels which became standard. I have a pretty good feel that the change happened right around 150-02000 and this gun at 150-0180x only helps validate that as the switching point. The RENE info indicates 150-20000 but this appears to be off by an order of magnitude since guns in the 150-02xxx range have the machined shroud which is indicative of cutting out the barrel from a forged blank instead of casting it (the channel is smooth and wide open on the cast piece to allow it to release from the mould) as a part.

What I forgot to mention is that the "S" is the proof mark used on other guns (Blackhawk cylinders, Hawkeye barrels, etc) so the use of an "S" as a proof mark is not without precedence. The circle-SR was the Newport mark, the Southport guns all used the "S". The -Six DA's were all made in Newport but maybe that one was proofed at Southport.

So....The "S" does make it a bit "unique?" I like that! Thanks for all of the info, weaselmeatgravy. And all of the input from others.

I did contact Ruger! They tell me the ship date is February of 1971. The invoice does not confirm dual ship dates or that it is a factory second, but the gal helping me told me that most likely it is a factory second if it has the "S" stamp. She confirmed what weaselmeatgravy stated in regards to the DA revolvers ALL coming from Newport. She also metioned that it was a RDA-34? Something about the ship date?
