Dr.CThanks guys, the old girl is kind of special to me. I bought it when the Vaqueros first came out. It is a first year production of this gun and was the first one to show up in this area. The grips were made from a cherry tree that fell over in my grandmother's back yard. I cut a bunch of it up for firewood and when splitting a few of the logs, I noticed it had some pretty decent grain so I split some up into quartered billets and set them back to dry. After 6 or 7 years I decided to cut a couple billets as close to quarter sawn as the wood would allow. I made a few knife handles and the grips for this gun. They are not perfect but I like the old aged look. My grandmother passed away a couple years ago and I like keeping this revolver around.

You're right, I had mentioned the story a while back but only had a couple lousy cell phone photos. I finally got around to shooting a little higher resolution images.
I still find firearms a little more difficult to capture than birds, flowers and landscapes.

I always wanted to make my own grips. Yours look nice and that's a neat story to boot.

You should give it a try. The only thing you have to lose is some time. Get a board of appropriate thickness, trace a set of grips that fit and give it a go.
Band saw, files, sandpaper, drill are all you really need. Yes, I have some more tools from the gunstocking work I do when building flintlocks, but the band saw, some files a drill and some sandpaper is all you really need. (well, that and a few hours of time.)
