Today was a day of very mixed emotions for me. Today marked the tenth anniversary for the Silver Eagle program that I started at my church. September 4, 2004, I announced a program to the kids at my church. If they would memorize the Books of the Bible, and recite them to me, in correct order, I would present them with a Silver Eagle. My pastor has allowed us time during the Sunday morning service to make a public presentation. To date one hundred one children have earned this award. This morning my pastor recognized Nita and me, then had all recipients present to stand. My heart was thrilled! The church secretary made an booklet to insert in the church bulletin with the names, dates, and ages of each one.
But today also was the funeral of one of our members, the former church pianist, and later organist. I had known this woman ever since joining East Side Baptist church, and she was a very special friend over the years. She has been battling cancer for six years. Having taught a kids Sunday School class, every one who had been in her class had their hand print in colored paint on a scroll which was displayed with the casket. Also, for today's service, the church organ was silent, the bench draped in black with a cluster of red roses upon it.
I couldn't help from thinking of the order of the passing of one generation as another comes up. I only hope to have the influence on the younger generation that this lady had.
