Today, October 23, would have been my Dad's birthday. I dwell on that, and the fact he was born 130 years ago, in 1891. He died in 1975, and I often think of what all transpired during his lifetime. Truly, he was of the black powder era!

Wow 1891! Happy birthday. Then did you know your grandparents very well? What year was your grandpa born?

My wife and I like antique stores. Once we were browsing with my parents in one, and they commented something to the effect of the stuff in the store is what they currently use at home.

Both of my grandmothers died before I was born, as did my maternal grandfather. My paternal grandfather was born in 1866 and died in 1956 just short of his ninetieth birthday. And because of his hearing I was never able to communicate with him too much. But my Dad did tell me much of his stories.

My mother's side of the family is well documented in a book about the family from about 1070 or so.

My dad's mom was born in 1895. We lived 2,000 miles away so we never got a lot of stories. She traced back to the Mayflower and also into all the royal houses of Europe (that and 5 bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks). We have some old family furniture items but the treasure is the photos. From the tintype era all the way to the 1960s. She tore them out of the albums and wrote on the back who/what. Knowing where/when/events the family was involved in really makes history come alive.

Well, happy dad birthday.
I had a very good friend back in the 60s and 70s that would have been 74 today. He drank himself to death at 35. I'm just amazed at all the life that he threw away.
