A friend of mine showed me a neat little handgun last year that peaked my interest, a little single shot .22 pistol from Savage called the 101. It looks just like a revolver but its a single shot with a breech that swings open to the right. I also got it because my mother is getting a pistol permit and this is just about right to learn on. I picked it up in an online auction for all of $60. It feels about the same as a Ruger Bearcat does and the trigger and action is exceptionally smooth thanks to the coil mainspring. I'll have to do something about the screw for the ejector rod housing since it isn't correct and it would catch on a holster. Once I got used to where to hold the little gun it proved to be fairly accurate with some ten year old Remington .22 ammo. Might be fun to take in the woods to whack a squirrel with, it certainly appears capable.

I believe I got mine in 1958 or 1959. Its Sr. Number is 1063. My entire family learned to shoot a pistol with it. That includes my wife, children and 5 grand children so far. We have 2 more that are 6 & 8, and their time is getting near. Its a neat little 22.

Thanks

Mike

The gentleman who designed that gun for Savage was a good friend of mine. He died last August just a few days short of his 95th birthday. His career (in firearms design) started with Colt in 1938 and on to High Standard after WWII and ended with the Bellmore Johnson Tool Co. in the early 70s.

Now to find an Ithaca M49 to go with it.

(Ithaca M49 looks like a tube fed 22 leveraction, it's a single shot)

and an Ithaca 66 supersingle shotgun.

buckeye at one time in the early 80's i had a 66 in 410,20ga,12ga, a vent ribbed 20ga. and a deerslayer rifled sighted 12ga, they are all gone now traded away :(

I was asked how the breech on this swings out, well the barrel and the breech are one piece. You simply push the "cylinder" to the right and the assembly just pops open allowing you to load the gun. The little semi rectangular thing is the ejector which functions just like any other single action revolver.
