A friend sent me this article and I think I'll pass it on.

Old School — Should you carry the latest model or a proven performer?

I liked the article, thanks. Guess I am old school. I carry a Colt 1911 or a Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt depending on what I'm doing that day. Working on the farm/farm chores or headed into civilization.

I move along anytime I hear the term "old school" these days. They usually, without even knowing, mean something (or someone) that works.

The Colt SAA and the 1911 are about as old school as you can get and about as fine handguns as are available. I have used both for 40 years or more and would stake my life on either of them.

I used to be an "old school" man when it came to guns. Walnut stocks on my rifles, blued steel and revolvers over semi autos in handguns.

In the past 20 years or so, I have come to appreciate the accuracy gained from a GOOD composite stock and the carry-ability of the semi auto over the revolver.

My 2 carry guns are both Ruger semi autos and the most accurate gun I own is a 40X Remington with a composite stock.

In my book, it is all about performance.. 8)

I favor a stainless Speed Six in 38 Spl.

as far as "old school" vs latest and greatest That pretty much sums it up .

Is that a Melvin Tyler grip insert on that Speed Six? That would be old school too?

PS I thought that they were out of business----they aren't:

Old School for me means a Trapdoor Springfield.
That Security Six embodies the K.I.S.S. principle.

My favorite revolvers are Pre-1973 Ruger Blackhawks, 1917 Colt, guess that would be considered "old school". That colt when it is fired uses hand loaded .45 Auto Rim, another "old school" but for carry I prefer stainless so most of the time it's a Ruger KP90DC that's so old school it has been discontinued for longer than I know or a 3"GP100 .357. sometimes an old Pre model 30 or 31 Smith in .32 S&W Long will travel with me! Sunday or other dress-up that calls for a coat, or a tank top with an unbuttoned untucked sport shirt most days covers the bigger guns with ease. I'm not a T-shirt guy! Really don't know why I haven't carried the '80's era Detective Special lately, maybe 'cause it ain't stainless, but it's still fun to shoot!

I know it depends on your own perspective about what is "Old School" vs. Newest & Modern.

To me, the latter started with things like the Glock and other "plastic fantastics", AR's and such. I am open-minded enough to know they work well as weapons and have their place. I just choose to not own or use them - usually: I carry a S&W 9mm Shield w/ Crimson Trace Laser. I like how it fits my hand. It is easily concealed and has been 100% reliable. I can also carry my LCR in 327 if I want to ( or a dozen other things in .32 to .45 calibers).

I happen to like blued steel and walnut. I also like the look of stainless guns and I have several examples of both Rugers and Smith revolvers. Oh, and that darn lock on the newer S&W guns? I avoid them if I can. I own one S&W with the offending "Hillary Hole", a 686 Performance Center in 38 Super. I own a few semiautos besides the Shield - several 1911's, Ruger 22/45's and two Taurus - a 9mm model 92 and a 40S&W model 101. I have 1 AR in 5.56 - I won it at a Friends of the NRA Banquet.

I hang around with another shooter in his 70's and we like the same things. Sometimes that is good and sometimes not since we try to grab the same gun sometimes  . I have managed to buy several of the ones he got to first. 8) He has a slight handicap that I no longer have. His lovely wife is as pro-gun as anyone but she still is known as the "Finance Minister" in our parlance. He has limitations that I do not have. He is also retired while I am still working full-time.

There is one advantage to being "Old School": Most of the shops I visit price used revolvers lower since most people want "plastic" guns these days. I won't say cheap but less than it could be.
