I am moving from KY to FL with a professional moving company in the near future, and I understand that they don't move guns and ammo. Any suggestions as to how I can get guns and ammo moved?

I wouldn't trust a moving company with my guns anyway. Is there any reason you can't rent a U-haul and move them yourself? It's not that far from Kentucky to Florida!

I've used movers a dozen or so times and they've moved firearms each time. No issues, just be sure you're a part of the inventory process on both ends. That said, I personally transported any firearms that would cause tears to flow if stolen/lost. It's not the movers I worry about, it's the packers; sometimes, literally, picked up off the street on the way to my house.

Depending on the size of your collection, rent a mid/full size SUV from a car rental company. Reason being is you don't have to bother with the Inspection sites in an unmarked rental vs a U-haul moving truck.

When I rented a U-haul, I was told that I needed stop at all inspection sites.

If moving them yourself just isn't an option I'd think about using one of those PODS (portable on demand storage) I used them last time I moved and a friend of mine used them when she move back to florida from California . They delive the container and drop it off in your drive way. You pack it up then give them a call. They pick it up then ship it where ever you are moving to and they store it until you call them for delivery.

Don't know how big your safe is but mine was too big to get in the POD upright. I didn't want to lay it down so I ended up hiring a safe moving company to move mine.

My first choice would be to move them myself.

I just moved and had no problems with the guns. Because the load was moved over the ocean they wouldn't move the ammo, which caused me a LOT of grief. I'm thinking it's the moving companies policies. May have the same kind of thieves working for them the UPS and Fed Ex does. I'd call someone else.

I've driven U-Haul's cross country, east to west and north to south and never had to stop at any inspection site. Of course, the last time I did that was 25 years ago. And the only time I've ever been stopped going across a state line is one time going from Fla. to Ga. in a private van. I was told that they stopped me to make sure that I wasn't smuggling tomatoes into Ga.

Move them yourself you must drive there anyways.
Have the movers take your safe restock it when you arrive!

I see no problem. ps

OK, thanks folks,

My solution is the simplest as suggested, I will just move guns and ammo myself. It will all fit in my van, so I'll just make an extra round trip (1500 miles). That will be the cheapest and most secure. I drive the 750 miles in 1 hop down, 1 hop back. Will sell the old beater safe and replace with a NEW one in FL.

Even if it is a really bad looking safe that wouldn't be good to use as a safe anymore, I would still keep it (let the movers move it). Gun safes are like woodworking clamps, you can never have too many. You might buy a safe that you will say "I'll never fill it" then a few years down the road you'll say "Dang, I need a bigger safe" :D

This move was in 2004.

citizens arent bonified businesses. your uhaul was taxed when you rented it. stopping at an inspection station with a retail trailer is not required. movers require licenses to move because they are in business to move. they pay tariffs and road fees based on wheel weight.
im sure any trucker here can explain it better than me.
ive driven 40' uhauls interstate and never stopped or was told to.
