Our church has a ministry to the deaf, as I have mentioned before. From my observation, it is both symbolic and words spelled out. The deaf section is to my right and front as I sit in the morning service, nd I often notice certain signs during the preaching.

Some time ago, as our pastor was preaching, he alluded to Ma Barker (as an evil influence). As I glanced over to the interpreter, I could not help but notice how he signed that reference. He simulated holding a Tommy gun at his hip, and firing it with hair shaking recoil motion!

I took ASL in college for my language reqirement. It really is a fascinating language. Believe it or not, different areas of the U.S. have different accents and slang.
