Moonclips

I am looking for moonclip recommendations for a SP 101 9mm. The gun I bought will come without any clips at all, and I've never used moonclips before so I don't want to waste time or money.

Also is it hard or painful to load/unload the clips by hand? I've noticed special tools for both operations but understand it's not too bad loading them but painful unloading. Also is a demooning tool hard to make for a home handy man?

I've been shooting a pair of old M25-2s and a 1917 Smith in .45ACP for years, with no special tools at all.

The clips are easily loaded by hand, no problem whatsoever. Very difficult to UNload them by hand, but all you need is a pair of suitably sized dowels (or pencils, pens, plastic rods or tubes, or whatever)--you put one in the center hole and the other one in a fired case and just shuck it right on out. No big deal!

I've never taken unfired ammo out of a clip (I put it IN there to shoot it, right?), but if I had a need to do so, I'd just get a piece of metal (or strong plastic) tubing of some sort that the whole loaded cartridge would fit into, and shuck it out the same way.

The Ruger SP-101 in 9mm is no longer made so one must hunt the shops and the internet. Gunbroker.com has one now and then.

I use full moon clips in my S&W 1917. I bought mine from Numrich Arms. Some were very tight, and after trying them with a variety of .45 brass, I used a rubber polishing bit in my Dremel tool to polish all of them and open out the tight ones. Never used a loading/unloading tool.
