I bought one of the new MKIII 22/45 with the removable wood grips a few months ago. I have been led to believe by some reading that it will take standard Colt 1911 grips such as those sold by Hogue. Then I have read that the grip panels on the Ruger are thinner and standard Colt grip panels are too thick and the screws will not reach.

Can someone please clarify this for me? I would like to buy some decorative wood grips for the gun, but I want them to fit when I get them.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I don't think I changed the screws on mine but it could stand the longer bushings. You will have to do a little recontouring of standard 1911 grips to fit. You need to clearance around the bolt release and round them off at the heel a little bit.

I watched a video on youtube where they put Hogue 1911 Officers grips on a 22/45 as I was interested in doing it. The process looked pretty invasive...Drememling the stock grip panels flat, JB Welding bushings on...is this the only way? I like the idea of Hogue grips, but I am not to keen on permanently altering my pistol in such a destructive way!

OP, the bushings in the RP are the thin bushings. I assume it would be easy to replace them with standard thickness 1911 bushings but have not done this myself. A little cutting on the grips is required to clear the mag release.

At this point I would sell the pistol with integral grips, and buy one with the removable panels.
