Looks like Ruger has decided to change the markings on the top of their Mini-14 Receivers. They used to be marked ".223 REM", but Ruger has now changed that to "5.56 NATO" on all their models. I've noted the change so far to be between 582-32522 and 582-50743. Can anybody narrow that down at all??
I suppose Ruger got tired of hearing the Mini-14 couldn't handle 5.56 NATO.

582-36715 is simply marked "CAL .223" ....not ".223 Rem".
Ruger Ranch Rifle....blued 'n wood....came with one 5-Rd mag, scope rings and D&T'd for a rail, but no rail inclued.

Yeah, I know...more info than you wanted...but hey, it didn't cost anything extra. .
Hope it helped.

Yeah, the earlier marking probably is "CAL .223", thanks for the correction.

Wasn't trying to correct you, just reporting what is marked on mine and that it fits into the serial number range you posted...but isn't NATO marked.

Thanks Buckeye Bill!
So looks like the change came between 582-456xx and 582-50743.

Can anybody else get it closer??

No update the one I have has the 5.56 NATO serial number 582-54583 you have marked earlier. Bob

while we are at it, about what number in te 580- series did they go to the tapered barrel?

Robert:
I've got that noted in the 2nd edition of the reference booklet. Don't have a reference in front of me right now, but seems it happened in the 580-46xxx to 580-50xxx range.
The early 581- Mini-Thirty's were also pencil barrel...changed at something like 581-06xxx if I remember correctly with the introduction of the 6.8SPC.

Hey Chet! Thanks for all your hard work! I still need to join RENE I always talk about it but end up squandering my gun money on something I don't need nearly as bad as I need your excellent reference data.

Speaking of things I don't need... I just picked up a 5819 582-66xxx and noticed a fee things compared to my other 5819:

1. Factory D&T'ed
2. SS finish is more of gloss when compared to earlier mini SS rifles.
3. Receiver marked 5.56 NATO
4. The factory flash hider now has machined flats for easier removal without having to use the T-60 torx bit.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Al.
I think I did a short paragraph on the D&T Mini-14 receivers in one of the last two RENE issues.
The new type flashhider is something new though.

I'm curious about the drilled and tapped Minis. Do they still have the cuts for the scope rings? Did Ruger change the receiver? What scope mount fits it? Any pictures available?

Sorry, Chet15

I bought my 1st mini ranch today at Walmart after having squirreled away $699.00. The # is 582- 509--.

I 'm a happy owner! been an AR guy for years, I just like the traditional stock, grew up carrying a Winchester 101 for birds and a Remington 700 for deer. Can't warm up to the pistol grip of the AR although I've been competing with them for years.

Bought a Bennelli M1 Super 90 shotgun and immediately swapped out the "pistol grip stock" for what I grew up calling a "pistol grip stock." This is as opposed to the
"straight stock " of a lever action.

Cheers

John

My mini is drilled and taped, stamped 5.56 NATO, AND HAS A TACTICAL FOLDING STOCK! Very accurate.

Hi everyone, I'm new here so if I posted this in the wrong place, please bear with me.

Can someone please advise me of where locate parts and accessories for Mini 14's? I found a few suppliers on the net, but none seemed to provide mechanical replacement parts. Soemthing else I need is an accu strut. Must be willing to ship outside USA.

Many thanks!

JcM
