I want to replace the sights on my Mini 14 however do not want to use a rail. I want a type of sight that is a direct replacement yet will be an improvement over the stock sights. I want something that allows me to quickly spot the target. I did have a scope but the mounts that bolt to the receiver leave a lot to be desired.

Presently, about the best you can do relative to a "direct replacement" rear sight is to look here:

Bear in mind though, that regardless of who's "drop in" sight you use, both you and the manufacturer are still being forced to "work around" Ruger's crappy sight mounting system(s), which BTW, have only gotten progressively worse during the various stages of Mini-development. Plus, aperture design has much to do with front sight clarity, as well as being able to "quickly spot the target"....and in those regards, the Tech-Sight is really no better than the sight which Ruger provided....plus, there's the chance that the supplied "eye hole" size itself won't be right for your own vision requirements and/or how you want the overall sight picture to look...and if that turns out to be the case (as it was with me), you'll find that buying a click-adjustable sight was only the beginning, not the end.
I guess what it boils down to is whether or not having "click adjustments" is worth the $70 to you because that's the only "sure thing" that you're getting. The rest is perty-much a crap shoot relative to how any certain sight performs "for you".

I installed m1 carbine rear sights on my mini's not hard to do and cheap.

.And yup, you are quite-correct about fitting an M1 Carbine sight to the pre-580 Ranch Rifles. I've done that numerous times myself....it's perty-much the cat's me-yow if ya ask me.
Too bad that Ruger decided to mess around with the receiver contours and mount system on their "new 'n improved" version. The first thing I thought when I took a close look what they're doing nowday's relative the rear sight and how it mounts was "who the heck came up with that?" :lol: :lol:.

We are even, I assumed he had an old style like mine. No matter how many times you learn not to assume anything, it is still an easy trap to fall into.
