I want to acquire a few more magazines for my "new to me" Mini 581. Right now I have a 5 round mag and a 20 round mag. I want to get 1 or 2 more 5 rounders and a couple of 10 rounders. Don't really have a need for more 20's or anything higher capacity.

My question is, what brands out there work really well? Or, am I well advised to stick with Ruger factory mags? I've heard the tale told both ways but never from anyone I knew to actually have first hand experience with them.

So, from the experts, what advice can you give?

Bob

My experience is if the mag isn't a Ruger I stay away. I've tried most the copies and found that the Ruger will work best.

One more, chances are my mags will only be used for pleasure, never defense. But if ever needed I want them to work.

Yep, Ruger mags are the way to go.
Keep an eye on the Midway-type vendors and you'll be able to catch them on sale. The last few I bought were $19.95 +shipping. Compared to buying from Ruger, thats close to half price.

^^^ Not doubting you, Sir, but i'd sure like to see the Magpul 20rd mag that even goes in a Mini, let alone is windowed...?

Seriously, if you have the info, i'd like to see where you got them; I'd try it...maybe.

For me, I just don't like the way the rifle handles with a 20 attached. So I bought another 5 and 3 10's off of Flea Bay. All factory Ruger.

Thanks for the input guys.

Stay away from anything except genuine Ruger mags for the Mini.

Some folks have been lucky with (insert brand here) and other folks have not. I also have not had total success with any aftermarket mags.

Everybody has good luck with the real thing. Don't waste your money otherwise.

Or go buy a batch of aftermarket magazines and when they don't work, you'll believe us. I know, cuz I tried them too.

I have never had any gun that was so insistant on certain magazines.

WAYNO.

Just a further note on my limited opinion. I have a number of aftermarket magazines.... first rule is if the company doesn't put their name on it.... don't buy. What I noticed is that folks will say this brand of mag works... well, the ones I have that aren't reliable I can't name because there is no name on them...

Hands down factory Ruger mags are the best. Second on that list is PMI. I don't have any experience with the MagPul mags but I hear good things. All my Mini 14 mags are primarily Ruger Factory with some PMI. I was in Cabela's recently ad they had a "bargain table" set up. There were 3 PMI Mini 14 mags for $20 each. One NIW, one in the bag but looked like it had been put in the gun a few times but not fired and one without out a bag like new. Yeah, I snatched those up.

I agree with sticking with Ruger all the way and I had a bunch of junk aftermarket mags that I actually threw away, but I did find the John Mason 10 rounders worked fine every time for me. I think I have a couple stashed somewhere still. They looked good in the gun and made shooting from the bench a little easier. I don't know if they're even made any longer but they were the only non-Ruger mag that ever worked for me.

I have 4 Magpul 20 rd magazines and they have never caused a problem and i like the window inthe side so you can see how many rounds are left.
Where in my post did u see I said mini 14 mags, the op was talking in gen terms about plastic mags not working and I said that they do, reading comprehension is not your strong suit is it. Oh and I do have Magpul 20 and 30 round mags for my mini and no they do not have a window, only the ones for the AR15. Both Mini and AR mags work as well as factory
