You are absolutely right - it would be dumb to cut someone down and make fun on someone's choices.
However - to suggest the Mini-14 would be a viable option for a MBR would be a serious disservice too.
As stated by many posters to this thread - the Mini14 is a GREAT plinker - but it is NOT a MBR.
The Mini14 is not fixable by you and me. We *HAVE* to send it back to Ruger for any major parts failures.
Picture this - you are in a Katrina event - and your hammer on your Mini14 breaks. Whatcha gonna do??? Or what if your sear breaks?? How about the trigger?? Or what about the firing pin??
If you have an AR or an AK or a FN or a G3 - in other words a REAL fighting rifle - you can fix it with the parts you have been storing for just such an event.
However with the Mini14 - you MUST send it back to Ruger for them to fix. Kinda tough after a societal breakdown.
So that is strike one on the Ruger - you can't fix it.
Strike two is it is not a durable rifle. While active duty I was part of a team that helped train members of the Bermuda Regiment. They were armed with Mini14 GB model.
Within 2 weeks EVERY rifle was down for one reason or another.
Pat Rogers has never had a Mini14 make it through a demanding 4 day carbine course.
James Yeager of Tactical Response has a very poor opinion of Mini14's due to many failures witnessed by him of the Mini14 in his Fighting Rifle classes.
Strike Three is the magazines. The ONLY magazines that can be relied upon are Factory Ruger magazines. Sure - you hear that your friend's-brother's-neighbor's-cousin's-barber's-relative in some other state once bought an aftermarket magazine that he swears is reliable with the one time he shot it with 2 rounds - but - the fact is only Ruger OEM mags are worth betting your life on. Sad fact is that a GOOD price for Ruger Factory mags is $30 each. Considering one should have a minimum of 30 mags for his MBR - that is a spendy proposition.
Now - ammo. The Mini14 is chambered for the .223 - not the 5.56mm.

Ruger Mini14 - great plinker - NOT a fighting rifle.
