What's the difference between a Marlin 1894C or CS?

I dunno. Are you sure of the CS? Wiki is hardly the definitive answer on anything, but:

If the S stands for safety in the newest models, why does the latest model, the 1894C as per Marlin's website, not have the S when it has the "hammer block safety"? The plot thickens... :mrgreen:

Anyway, my intentions...
Been looking for an 1894CSS. Pretty darn scarce.
So, I've never totally given up settling on a 1894C. But now, on a local forum, I see a CS for sale, and for the life of me I see no differences between the two models. :?

Per my BBGV, the .357 was introduced in 1984, cut checkering became standard in 1994, a hooded front sight became standard in 1999, and during 2001, the .357 Model 1894 Model's nomenclature was changed from 1894CS to 1894C.

They used the S designation for the safety for some time then they stopped doing that.

BTW, if you don't like the crossbolt safety, or want to ensure that it doesn't get set accidentally, just place an O-ring in the groove on the safety. I think a 3/16" works, but check it out at your hardware store.
