just finished these up this weekend. they were definitely the most challenging material I've worked with so far.

Bookmatched and Stabilized Mammoth tooth.

LSCG,

Very very nice! Mammoth teeth have natural patterns and when preserved in the earth for thousands of years various minerals replace the enamel and dentine (fossilized). Yours are just beautiful.

I sure would like for you to make me a pair for the MK I A-100 grip frame.

Lone Star Custom Grips makes fine grips.

Those are very nice but aren't they very brittle?

I have never seen or heard of grips made out of this material. They are beautiful looking grips for sure, they almost look fragile in appearance to me.

Thanks for sharing.

the Material itself can be very Brittle or it can be very hard with brittle parts in between. stabilization helps greatly and a strong backing material helps even more.

while I wouldn't use them super hard they would hold up to normal use.

Zane nailed it. Mammoth tooth is a difficult medium to work with but if it has been stabilized and epoxied to a backing material like he did it is more predictable to work down, shape and polish. I've used some on custom knives.

Very nice work, Zane. Did you introduce some dye into the mix or are those the colors God chose? The mammoth tooth I have used has just been varying shades of brown with a little creamy/tan in it.

thanks Robb!

to my knowledge the blanks weren't dyed but I can't say for certain. the stabilizing resin was clear so i'm thinking they probably weren't.
