(I am going by faith that this is about Carlson's Raiders; the predecessors of Marine Force Recon. I can't get the YouTube video to load.)
I have the movie with Randolph Scott and Robert Mitchum. The selection process was unworldly.
In ways, it was like Delta selection, both physically and mentally: and it messed with their heads.
One of the culling methods used was a 40 mile forced march, at a 5 MPH pace, with a heavy pack.
That friends is SEAL Team 6/Delta Force territory.
In WWII, they were buried where they fell, and no attempt was made to send them home to the US.

It is about Carlson's Raiders. We finally went back to retrieve the dead and found that they had been reverently laid to rest by the Islanders.
That is always worth seeing again...

My dad was with the 2nd Raider Battalion on Bougainville. Those guys live through hell. At the end of the campaign he was sent home with malaria and given a medical discharge. He was a very proud Marine and loved the Corp. He joined the Corp in 1938 and was a sea going Marine in the north Atlantic and when the war started he joined the Raiders. He was a good man, a good husband and father, a good Marine, and lived a good honest life. What else can a man ask for? We lost him in 2002 at the age of 82. The men and women of that generation truly were "The Greatest Generation". All the men and women who serve are heroes in their own right. God bless them all.
