Anything is possible coming out of the Ruger factory, but it does sound like somebody has changed the barrel on it, since the entire 300000 range was originally dedicated to the 6-1/2" length Magnum Single-Six model. Would be interesting to see how the letter comes back from the factory, but I'm betting RSSM.
A question for you though...does that gun have the heavy machine marks on the bottom of the cylinder frame ahead of the trigger guard or is it finely polished?

While it's true that the 300K series was supposed to be RSSM guns, there were a considerable number of RSS5's made in that series as well. Totally possible for a "late ship" magnum to have been fitted with the shorter barrel, I'd think.

Not saying it was, you understand . . . just possible.

Ya need a letter!

Neat find.
