magazine value ??

Looking to get an estimated value on some Mark 1 magazines........

All are 9-shot, with chrome bottoms. Some have the follower slot on one side only, & some have the follower slot on both sides. All are in very good condition, with very little bluing wear.

to sell or to buy ???? we've bought and sold them at all kinds of prices recently, condition is everything, as well as they being "original" all the parts, follower, button, spring....the lips at the top,are they good or worn or out of "shape" are they blued, rusted or stripped of any finish.......bottom line they run around $20 to $35 around here for nice ones, I bought a dozen of them a few weeks ago for $10 each,,,,,,sooooo gotta look around...........then there is the "pucker factor" when buying anything....... 8) :roll: :wink:

As usual, Dan is spot on.
The oldest magazines,, (the ones with just one follower slot,) generally sell for a bit more than the later ones. And,, some of those,,, from the earliest years have a different look & a collector may want a specific type. You'd need pics from Chad's book to see the differences.
In general, when looking at any for sale, I study the condition of them, as well as the type. The one slotted ones,, I see sell for $30 & up most of the time. The others,,, $20 & up.

Just happen to be packing a bunch of stuff up for this weekends gunshow.



The magazine on the far left will only work in the A54 grip frame early Ruger Standards. The magazines on the right have follower button slots on both sides of the magazine so they can be used in either the A54, or the A100 grip frame pistols.
The one thing I don't like about these style magazines is the configuration of the feed lips. The top front section of the feed lips are sorta like springs, in that they are easily broken, or cracked if one tries to reshape 'em.

I sold one of the magazines on the right in my picture at a local gunshow last Saturday for $25.00. I know, that doesn't, or shouldn't, set any sort of standard, but my two early pistols function much better with the Ruger Mark II style magazine bodies than they do with the original ones.

A possible problem with those early Standard Model/Mark I magazines having the zig-zag follower spring is spring weakness. It seems that the older mags of that type, if kept fully loaded for extended periods, will demonstrate malfunctions for that reason. There are usually some of the earlier mags of that kind listed on eBay for anywhere from $10 to $30. But I would hesitate to buy one not knowing the condition of the follower spring. It's a waste of money to buy one with a weak spring. The later Mark II magazines having the coil spring do not appear to have the same problems, and can be used in Standard Model/Mark I pistols without any problems. But the follower button has to be installed on the right side.

If anyone knows a source for the early A-54 frame zig-zag magazine follower springs, preferably new or NOS, I would be very interested in knowing about it.
