Never saw such a mount on a deuce-and-a-half, always had them on the M-3 half track.

And what are those muzzle devices? Flash hiders? or some type of booster?

No, couldn't be a booster as there is no barrel jacket. Suppressors?


And squared ammo boxes?

Yup, except two at the waist (one each side).

No lower turret on the H and J models, just the upper (dorsal).

nope - at least some of them had 18. I saw pics with 8 in the nose, two twin blisters on each side - that makes 16, and with the roof turret locked forward that makes 18.

This B-25 has a glazed nose, but the four cheek mounted guns (two each side) make 8 + 4 + 2 = 14.

This bomber has one fixed forward firing gun in the knose, and is a veteran of the Italian campaign of WW II.



Two waist guns, firing more or less rearward, were both fired by the radio operator:

Think so. I think you've seen pics of two .50s mounted in one common fairing on a side, and I think you've seen pics of two .50s mounted in two separate fairings on a side (such as Bob shows above), and I think you've combined these in your mind. Make sense? :wink:

BTW, they had structural issues with the fuselage when mounting TWO on the side. I can't imagine that they'd have even tried mounting FOUR that way.

Dunno about your arguments over the count but I saw there were parrallel mounted 50s in factory pics as well as the singles in 2 separate pods. I do know the pods were retrofitted as kits in the field so it would have been distinctly possible to build one that way. I would never say anything didn't exist after being in the military (3rd generation Navy) I've seen a few things that weren't supposed to exist as well as pictures of modified gear that I would have sworn didn't exist also.

Ya have to remember, necessity is the MOTHER OF ALL INVENTION. If a need was perceived, I am sure our men “modified” gear on a regular basis. Some stuck, others not.

In 1968 & 1969 I was assigned as a INFANTRY PLT LEADER with ALPHA CO 2-2 MECH 1ST INF DIV in VIET NAM. We had any where from 4 to 6 to 8 M- 113 APC`s per PLT. Each APC had a 50 CAL Machine Gun & 2 to 3 M-60 Machine Guns mounted on top of each one of them. Along with several 1000 rounds of ammo for each one of them. I had used and fired both the 50 CAL MG & the M-60 MG stateside and really like and respected both of them. But after my first big firefight with the VC & NVA in VIET NAM. I developed a serious Love Affair with both the 50 CAL MG & the M-60 MG. For when we brought Our 113`s on line, our fire power was truly unbelievabley devastating. It always simply amazed me at the destructive power we had no matter how many times I seen it. Our 50 CAL MG`s and Our M-60 MG`s were turley works of art. But the M-60 MG as good as they were, did not even compare to the 50 CAL MG, not even close. In the hands of a good gunner, behind the butterflies. The 50-CAL MG could just simply shear the top`s off of and silent heavily fortified bunkers that were giving us major problems. The 50 CAL MG could very quickly cut down the brush between us and the VC & NVA, and to deny them the ability of hiding from us. And the 50 CAL MG`s in the right hands could very quickly cut down trees for MED A VAC Helicopter Landing Pad. To get our KIA`s & WIA`s out and much need supplies and reinforcements in. The 50 CAL MG was just a magnificent magical weapon that saved a lot of our lives and took a lot of the VC`s & NVA`s lives. It has been 50 years ago now, but I still remember the comforting sound of our 50 CAL MG`s especially at night.

There is usually a quad .50 setup at the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoots here in Kentucky. It's on a trailer. When they can get all four guns running at once it is, indeed, impressive.

My high school typing teacher circa 1978 was a truck driver in Viet Nam. He truly loved the quad .50 cals when a convoy got hit.

It's a typically sloppy History channel show, supposedly about a gunshop in Utah where the guys make wild stuff. They have yet to fire a full-auto weapon---everything they have shown seems to be semi-auto builds. And everything they shoot goes up in a big ball of flame.
