M77 ring and scope removal and re install..repeatable ??

Ruger Hawkeye or M77...
Have you found that you could remove your scope and rings as a assembly, then reinstall and could you return to your previous zero ?

Working with the 375 Ruger, and wondered if I could pull the scope and ring assy., to test the iron sight zero, and reinstall the scope and ring assy. to zero.
I know there are lever mount rings, but I wondered about simply unbuckling the rings with scope ...and replacing back to zero.

Yes it can be done. While Ruger ring mounts are not true "return to zero" mounts, if you are consistent they will re-zero or be very close. I do this w/ scopes & peep sights on a couple of rifles and have taken a zeroed backup scope on hunts.

to my surprise I have removed and replaced scopes without losing zero...one time I swapped scopes on #1s and still had zero on both rifles. I don't expect that to happen again...

My Rugers do - when I install a ringset, I bias each ring's lower half as far as their tolerances allow, while the base screw is being tightened.

I bias (put thumb pressure) the forward ring towards the muzzle; the rear ring towards the buttplate.

I only lap scope rings if there's a visual/tactile defect in the edges of the rings that contact the scope tube, or if I'm having a scope-slippage issue - but I use a 10" long machined steel rod to align the rings with each other, when they're first installed.

I've gone back and lapped every set I have. It is surprising how much out of round / alignment some of them were.

Lapping rings is an alarming experience....... When you see how they are so untrue or how many high spots they have.

Thanks guys, I appreciate what you have learned. I have one of the 375 Ruger laminated Alaskans which I have already installed the scope on, but I wanted to check the zero of the iron sights so I could use them if I chose no scope, or if I did hunt with the scope and were to damage it on a hunt...the iron sights are pretty nice so I wouldn't be afraid to use either.... Appreciate knowing if approached properly, probability is that I will be very close to zero when refitting the rings and scope as a assembly back onto the rifle..

Remember scopes can be "SHIMMED" with thin brass or common scotch tape. I don't like the idea of the tape thought.
