Did they make these in plain barrel models w/o iron sights? If so, did it have a different model number designation?

Yes they did, I'm not sure when they stoped making them with iron sights or if they had a diffenent model number. I looked for one for a long time, found one and was made in 1985.

The ones with iron sights are 77/22RS. Slick barrel models are 77/22R. A SS will have a K in the designation. R stands for rings. S stands for sights. So an RS has rings and sights. I have a 77/22RS made in 1984, the year of introduction. Bob! :)

Bob is spot on with their number designations. I too have a 77/22RS (made/bought in 1985 though). Still like new despite the 10's of K or more its shot. When I decided to buy one I was going to take a 77/22R first, but then changed to the RS to be more versatile. Bought a Burris Compact 2-7 for it from them (they traded rings so I'd have lower ones for that scope), a Rossi 62SA for the wife and an Anschultz Wood Chucker for the son. Cost me just under $750 to stop in to say hello to friends there that day. :o

Still have that 77/22RS, but now its a switch barrel with a GM 17HM2 barrel added. Note to self... still need to get higher rings for it so I can get the new scope for it mounted (rings I have won't let it clear the open sights on the 22LR barrel). Why I don't know... with the 17HM2 barrel I'll probably never shoot the 22LR barrel again.

Anybody want to trade rings? :?: :)
