M224 60mm Mortar

Ah, for the good ol' days. :wink:

Even the Marines like this mortar, although they have grumbled about the lack of a thermonuclear round, and absence of a bayonet lug. (Maybe they can get HK to copy it and add the lug. Not sure if turning Oberndorf loose on nuclear physics is a good idea).

Strange looking baseplate! And those handles?

I don't remember ever having a 60mm mortar in our unit, though we did have three 81mm mortars.

The real granddaddy of mortars was the old 4.2" mortar, rifled barrel hitting like a 105mm howitzer!


Or the 36" Little David. Now there was a mortar!

In my outfit in Vietnam, the 81 and the four-deuce were assigned to the mortar platoon, and stayed in the firebase. The straight-leg grunts humped the 60.

Our 4.2 was track mounted....thank God.
