I am having my Second Edition 45.70 with a 28 inch barrel converted from a ghost ring to target irons with a qualitry ladder rear sight mounted over the safety and a spirit level front sight. Both are made by Montana Vintage Arms and the work is being done by Dan Pedersen. I got the idea from an article on a custom #1 built by Dan.

No risk of losing collector value in the project. The rifle came to me w/o the presentation box, loading tools, and scope that the originals had. I will never carry it in the field for game -- it is too heavy and pretty for that. But I do want to do some longer range silhouette work with it. In a pinch though I might still use it on a buffalo hunt....with my 1S 45-70 as a backup.
