Lyman #1 Overrun ?

Hi I just picked up one of the Lyman centennial overrun guns RENE shows about 40 made I have one of the original guns so I started comparing them the original guns had the special serial numbers on all the parts that came with it 78 0001 thru 78 1000 but I noticed that the overrun guns scope is numbered 78 1125 would that suggest that there were at least 125 of the overrun guns made or did Lyman just make a bunch of the scopes ? does anyone else have one with a number higher than this ?

That even confuses me more you would think that your scope would have shipped with one of the original 1000 all of the ones I have seen had the matching numbers on the gun and scope Hey maybe you have a duplicate number scope oh boy a new area of Ruger collecting :lol: :lol: :lol:

The scope that came with my overrun is #78-1098. The rifle has a regular production sn 132-20xxx. Letter from Ruger has it shipped in January 1981 "as a model 1S Lyman 'Centennial' Rifle in the 45/70 caliber.'.
 
Thanks tomno.1 did your gun come with the wood display case ? I understand they were shipped in the same case as the original guns without all the accessories I picked up an extra case a long time ago and was going to sell it but shipping was to much so I kept it lucky for me I have only seen 2 other overrun guns for sale over the years and they didn't have the cases

Mine came with the wood case and the scope - no other accessories. Over the years I've managed to get the rest of the accessories. Lyman still sells a soft cover version of the Lyman Centennial book. A few years back Lyman sold off all their scope parts to Parsons. I don't know if Parsons is still around, but I was able to get some literature about the Centennial scope from then.
 
Hi I have been trying to gather all the accessories for years I have the book and the box of empty cases no luck on the rest I was going to modify the case for my #1 38/55 glad I didn't when I think back on it I bought the case about 4 miles from where I saw the last overrun gun for sale the guy had bought the case at an estate sale could have been where the gun had come from

In 1978 Lyman put out a Centennial 45-70 reloading package (blister pack) with the following:

1. Bronze Centennial medallion
2. 3 die set 7460496 (marked Centennial)
3. Large mould handle (I think the wood on this is walnut - it differs from the wood on regular handles)
4. Mould 457193C

I picked up one of these sets on ebay years ago.
 
Thanks I have one of the original guns with all the goodies all the packaging right down to the shipping carton so I know what to look for All I need now is one of the 45 90s that were hand engraved in the red lined case :lol: :lol: :lol:

Were there overurn guns and Second Edition Lyman Centennials? I have one of the latter minus scope and presentation box.

There may have been a few centennial etched extras as well as the unmarked overrun rifles. If it's etched and under sn 1000, it may be a first run rifle.
If it just has the regular Ruger SN only, then it's probably an extra.
If it's engraved, it could be one of the 100 Grade I that were made (unlikely), and which don't see the light of day very often.
 
It's my understanding there were three groups. The deluxe came in a red lined box, had different accessories, nicer engraving, gold inlay, and it was a run of 100 rifles. The regular grade came in the green lined box, etched engraving, no gold and was a run of 1,000 rifles. The overrun group consisted of what was left over after the 1,100 Lymans were made. No engraving, no gold, it seems some came with green lined boxes and scopes but no accessories. Has the heavy Lyman barrel and a regular production serial number.
 
Im pretty sure the first overrun gun I looked at was etched with no special L78 serial numbers

Wunbe does your 2nd edition have the scope mounts or is the barrel just plain or drilled and tapped for scope blocks ? I have never heard of a 2nd edition

Mine is engraved on the left side of the receiver with flourishes and "Lyman 1873-1973 Centennial Edition II " and on the right side flourishes with " Lyman 1873-1973" and a running deer in the middle. On the underside of the receiver there are two serial numbers 131- 0608X and L-78- 047X. It is round barreled with two drilled holes near the receiver, two @2 and 3/4" from the crown and a dovetail. I have mine set up with Montana Vintage Arms Creedmore-type rear and a soule sight on the tang. It has super wood as most do and is in excellent condition.

When I got it it had a receiver sight in the rear screws and a blade sight up front. No scope, no box or other extras. I have kept all the original safety parts etc.

wunbe I wasn't thinking right when you said adition II all the 1 of 1000 regular run guns were edition II it sounds like the gun you have had the scope and mounts removed there wasn't enough adjustment with the lyman scope set up shooting factory ammo to zero at 100 yards so guys opted for a set up like yours

If your looking for one, there's a Lyman Century scope on Gunbroker, auction #412062205.Don't know anything about it but I see it has a replaced washer.
