Dad passed away in mid January, but due to deep frost in the ground he was not buried until May. Mom has not chosen a head stone yet so Dad,s grave had a temporary brass marker.
Well yesterday I had a meeting in the town where Dad is buried and I made it a point to be there an hour early so I could stop and talk with Dad for a bit. I looked all over for his marker, and I new the general area where he was. He was buried about fifty feet down the hill from my grand parents. I could not even find where the ground had been disturbed back in May.
Got on the phone with the funeral home and they told me that somebody was stealing the temporary markers and selling as scrap.
How much lower can you get? :evil: :twisted:

Evil, pure evil. What also disturbs me about this is that some scrap dealer is also participating in this theft by knowingly buying these stolen markers. They HAVE TO KNOW these items are stolen, how else would someone get them?

I am so very sorry your family has to deal with this. It is difficult enough to lose a family member, but to have them disrespected this way adds salt to the wound.

Hope they catch the SOB responsible for this outrage.

Most of the grave markers at one cemetery here have flat stones with bronze plates holding the data, also a socket to hold a bronze vase. The vase may be inverted for mowing, then placed upright to hold flowers. These vases are disappearing so fast that plastic copies are now being used.

I take comfort in knowing that they have their reward.

Maybe ONE notch lower? A couple of years back, bronze markers were being stolen from a cemetery out here and sold for scrap, just as you've seen. Thing was, they were coming from Riverside National Cemetery! Not even melted down or anything to disguise their origin, just the way they were pulled from the ground.

Only saving grace to the story is several people, both thieves and the buyers, got some time to contemplate the price of scrap steel, as they looked thru bars made of the stuff for a while. And a law was passed that actually has helped curb a lot of this kind of theft and sale... Legitimate scrap dealers grouse, as one would expect, since it involves extra paperwork, and it hasn't stopped the problem, but "criminal" things have slowed down a fair amount.

I'm very sorry to hear this has affected your family personally, Hogan. Dunno what else to say?

My dad was a Marine Raider. He died in 2002 at the age of 82. I try to keep an American flag on his grave 365 days a year. I visit my parents graves once a week. It infuriates me beyond belief that someone takes his flag every once in a while. I don't understand how some people can be so disrespectful.
