Loaded guns in places they shouldn't be

I think the bigger problem is guys just working the action thinking a round would eject. They don't even look inside.

A malfunction could leave you with an unsafe situation with one in the chamber.

I'm thinking I've done that many times... if there is still a round in the chamber and you expect it then most of us would note that it ejected or not... but some guns do not lock open on the last round or some that are supposed to don't sometimes and so it would be easy to drop the mag and wrack the slide and just assume the chamber was empty when you did this. Before this discussion I thought sticking the finger in the mag well from the top when clearing the gun was kind of silly ... now I know different.

A gun organization posted a few pic of displays, I think at a OGCA show, and one was a table with about 8-9 riles, with the muzzles pointer toward the aisle!! I commented that I haven't seen that at any show in 40 years. It just isn't allowed. The reply was that this show allowed it, and the table holder was a long time dealer and usually displayed this way. I couldn't tell if the actione were open, but I don't care. I would not walk past that table, and I would immediately report it to the show sponsors. But then I was 3 tables away when a 12 gauge took out a couple of 2x4 ceiling tiles at the only gun show ever held in Cobo Hall, Detroit.

I never accept or pass off a firearm without checking the chamber and recheck it in both directions. It only takes a second to make sure that a gun is safe and that same second can be an irreversible incident if someone is being stupid...

My eldest daughter wants to get the 'required' class here in MD to get her permit and learn to shoot properly. I had a couple pistols out and asked her if she thought that they were loaded (they weren't). She said " I don't know." . I said this is the first lesson. ALL guns are loaded until you personally inspect them and verify that they aren't. NEVER take someone else's word that they are unloaded.

Whenever I hand a firearm to someone to look at, I always check to make sure it is unloaded, then I hand it to them, saying "it is unloaded, but you should check to make sure". Those that don't I either respectfully take it back, or leave the premises.

Do you leave the action open? If not I would not accept the gun from you.
