Sorry guys. The hunt was in Arizona. I was with a guide who hunts about 40 lions a year. This particular lion was dining on a ranchers calves and had recently killed one. We tracked the lion for about 4 hours and maybe 4 1/2 or more miles before catching up to him. The dog in the picture is one of the guides. They are amazing dogs. I shot the lion from about 18 yards as he was jumping from a tree. The shot caught him in the lower back and he ran to a bluff where the dogs cornered him. That's how the dog got bit. The lion had to be shot a second time to put him down.
For the shot I used winchester silver tips in 200 grain. I would suggest a hard cast bullet instead. The silver tip is fine if you don't hit bone as the lion is a thin skinned animal but a good hard solid would have given better penetration and probably put him down closer to the first shot.

That is a good looking cat . What was the weight on it ? ..It looks to be about the size of a big male leopard . Are they as aggressive as our leopards? A leopard weighing about 40 kilograms ( 80 - 100 pounds ) will kill a man double that weight easily in a matter of minutes and drag him up a tree ...They are shy animals and will rather shy away from a confrontation , but if you get him in a tree and he feels cornered ....he is going to be a handful.
