I see where Lipsey's has the Vaquero in a Sheriff's model in .44 Sp. with 3-3/4" barrel.

Is this the NEW Vaquero? or the larger frame model?

It is only referred to as Vaquero, so I didn't want to buy it if it was the larger frame gun. Anyone here know for sure?

Its the smaller or mid size frame. There's one in my pocket right now. A very shiny, polished S.S.. Its full of 185gr DEWC from Penn Bullets sized .431. I haven't made a final decison on charge weight. Have them on 5,6, and 7 gr of Unique. The load will do double duty in my Bulldog. Though the Ruger will also get the Skeeter load when in the hills. steve b

Rest assured - it's the smaller midframe New Vaquero.Ruger adds to the normal confusion here--caused by their reference to just Vaquero now in ads and literature--also by stamping just "Vaquero" on the frame as well..an anomaly only on the .44 Special New Vaqueros. Fabulous gun btw. I swapped the hammer out for a Montado so now have identical twins with my.357 Montado.

Edit: Seems we're all on the same page here :)

Easy way to tell...the lg framed Vaqueros have a 2-digit prefix in the serial number. The medium frame New Vaqueros have a 3-digit prefix.

...And ALL factory .44 Specials are the smaller midframe--and they're unique that way among all the centerfire calibers. Always have to ask on the others if just responding to a "Vaquero" ad these days, and don't have ready access to close-up pics, the serial number, a pic showing the NV's higher, backswept--or Montado/SASS--hammer (but it can always be swapped out, so not a tell-tale way to differentiate) etc. Even folks with other caliber'd NVs that actually say "New Vaquero" on the frame are calling these "Vaquero" now. That's how insidious the Ruger/distributor/vendor misnomer'ing has gotten.

There were no original Vaqueros in 44 Special. So since the 44s aren't a "New" version of anything that existed before, they are just Vaqueros.

I've heard this before and don't buy it. If official, me thinks the parenthetical part is ("we messed up"). There must be an equally interesting explanation all New Vaqueros are also now being called just "Vaqueros" in virtually all current factory, distributor and vendor literature while all (non .44 Special) NV guns are labeled otherwise on the frame--correctly, because they ARE mid-frames.

is this the same hammer that is used in the new vaquero birdshead 45's ? and if so where did you get them and what is the cost ?

thanks

No, the New Vaquero Birdshead uses the SBH hammer not the Montado hammer. It is the same shape as the Montado hammer except the serrations/checkering on top are different.

I think they're Super Blackhawk hammers which are the same profile but different hatching, (while the SASS-edition NVs are Montado hammers IIRC). I was ready to go the SBH route but was lucky that my smith, a top SA tuner, had not only one but two spare "take off" Montado hammers (Bisley swaps or some such). The other went to my friend's Sheriff. I admit that.fortune doesn't happen daily, but they're out there. Cost was moderate as another customer wanted the NV hammers. I'd inquire with SA-specialty smiths that might occasionally get Montado-to-Bisley (and such) swap requests. I don't think anyone's "officially" selling new Montado hammers. Someone correct me.
