I have a current Ruger M77 project, needing a new mag spring, thinking about an SMLE mag spring.

Could one of you SMLE guys measure your springs for me? I'd need to know the length of the folds - i.e. front to back as installed in the mag box - as well as the resting height of the spring - i.e. top to bottom if the follower weren't in the magazine preloading the spring.

The standard M77 mag springs seem to work ok so far, but I'd like to get a little more authority on the mag followers supporting my last few rounds.

By my measurements, I have the "leg" length is 2 3/4". Distance between the top of spring (not follower) and point of spring is 5".

If you want photos of how I measured, pm me and I'll upload.

When my No5Mk1 seemed to be weakly feeding the last round, I pulled the follower and spring and slid in a half of a clamp-type clothespin to take up the space.

Hope that helps...

Awesome. Thanks Aqualung.

I'm fabbing +2 mag boxes for a few M77's, so I have a bit extra height in the mag box. I'll have to measure tomorrow, but I'm pretty confident that 2 3/4" legs will work fine, and I'd venture the 5" resting height is a comfortable 1 1/2" taller than the factory Ruger mag follower spring - so I should see better upward pressure on the last couple rounds with an SMLE spring.

Thanks again.
