Lee bullet mould lube question.

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Only part of a mould I lube is the sprue plate and alignment pins.Very very lightly lubed.I use synthetic 2 stroke oil.Just be careful not to get any in the cavities or you will get some messed up boolits.Dont ask how I know that

Hi,

I use a stick of Alox, the plain ol' NRA blend of alox and beeswax or whatever it is that's been around "forever." Lee sells it, and I'm sure other vendors of lubes do, too.

Heat the mold (you can dip a corner in your molten lead to get it hot enough to lube), open it, make sure the alignment pins are at the bottom, and just barely touch them w/ the stick. The mold will be hot enough to melt "enough." Close the mold, position the sprue plate in "ready to pour" position, turn the mold upside down, and just barely touch the screw w/ the stick.

If you did it right, you've got just the right amount of lube on the right places. If you did it wrong, you'll get lube running into the actual mold cavity or those tiny vent lines on the faces of the mold halves. When that happens, you'll get cruddy bullets w/ wrinkles, holes and other ugly features, and will learn enough about cleaning the molds (mineral spirits, hint, hint) to become a member of the "Don't ask how I know that!" crowd. Don't ask how I know that! :D

I buy those 4g single use tubes of Permatex anti-seize lube. I use a toothpick to apply it. You can get it at most auto supply stores for a buck of two. Works great.

Go with the two cycle motor oil .

Synthetic ashless is the best , or even better contact the BullShop for some of their sprue plate lube.

I think they`re about finished with their move from AK.

But as 06ackley suggested go sparingly as it`ll migrate as the heat rises ,I usually lube the screw cold then rub the top & bottom of the plate & pins after preheating by ust touching a Q-tip to the lid (do not saturate it)& soaking up that to do the lubing with .

On a 2 cavity I litely lubs the "Vs" bout every 50 casts.

I flux with bits and pieces of bullet lube. That's what I use to lube the mold. Just a touch and the lube melts and runs around the sprue plate and hinge pin.

Bullshop Sprue Plate Lube, available from Bullshop, in Alaska. Contact info on The Cast Boolits Forum. A little dab'll do ya.
