which magazine would be best?: Shooting Times or Guns and Ammo?
Keeping in mind I'm a revolver guy...

Of the two, I prefer Shooting Times. It actually has some in-depth articles.
Lately in G&A, It's hard to tell the ads from the articles. They just blend together and appear to be made for people who can't pay attention long enough to read a decent article.

I have gone back to the Handloader. They are again doing and excellent job. Brian Pearce is the major handgun guy there, now and does a super job.
I subscribe to the electronic magazine (my wife LOVES that). It is handy on my computer, costs a third of the paper copy and is very easy to retrieve data.

I won't buy either mag anymore. Shooting times keeps getting smaller and smaller. Pretty soon it will just be the front and back cover. I really like Handloader. Brian Pearce usually has some very good articles in it for handgunners. My own humble opinion is that Pearce is as close to a Elmer or Skeeter as we have now. Also like Jim Wilson.
Neither is anyway close to what it used to be. Not even close.

Neither, Handloader and American Handgunner. As of late, I'm trying to ignore Venturino though. :roll:

For many years Shooting Times has leaned a little more to the handgunner than some of the other gun rags. Handloader is one of the very best & yes Brain Pearce always has good first hand info on many different sixguns. All his articles are well done. I do wish he would show more of the game taken with sixguns, every issue he states he's taken many head of big game with different sixguns but shows the same 2 mule deer every time, I think most of us like to see the photos, especially those taken with a sixgun.
I believe most of the gun writers would rather just be themselves rather than be compared to someone else. Many of the gun writers constantly make reference to Elmer Keith & I think that gets them in a little trouble some times. Sheriff Jim Wilson was a very good handgun writer as is Ross Seyfried, I sure wish he was still with Handloader magazine, he is perhaps the best of them all, just my opinion.

I forgot to mention Ross Seyfried. He was my favorite when he wrote for G&A. He could write about anything from pellet guns to elephant guns. I believe he was an excellent shot with all guns. I wonder sometimes if some of the new writers do their best shooting with the keyboard.

Of the original two asked about, G&A is better. Shooting Times hasn't been worth reading for a couple decades now.
Both mags were great in the early '70s.

Seems like the correct answer would be one that answers the question asked. :roll: Okay, okay, I know everyone is trying to be helpful, but it seems like every question ever posted is ignored so someone can state their opinion on something related. I already get American Handgunner, that's why it wasn't part of the question. I agree, it's pretty good.

I liked that big fat glossy one: Handguns/Guns, but don't subscribe anymore. The one magazine I did renew was Shooting Times and it isn't so great in my opinion. Of course maybe my opinion was shaped by the fact that when I renewed it I didn't receive the mag for months and then got 3 issues in one week and another issue the next week ?????

I try to stay away from anything that includes Patrick Sweeney. His credentials are impressive, but his writing is nothing but promo copy for the folks who send him the guns to test or just to promote himself. He really never does an honest "compare and contrast" - just bloats up certain products. And if he doesn't like shooting in Michigan's winter, he should move somewhere warm.

i was just gonna say that. shooting times and guns and ammo seem to promote company payoffs rather than good guns. i have seen them give good reviews on guns that deserved it but have also seen rave reviews on guns that noone but the author could get to fire and function well.

I have subscriptions to none of these, but i usually read them all. I have a lot of free time.
I've recently started really enjoying Handloader and i don't even handload, yet. I also like Handgunner. Like others have said, they have the best articles that don't seem like ads. Once you notice it, so many articles in the other mags just feel like your reading an ad and you can't even finish it.

I too have been mostly a revolver guy.
I have received Shooting Times for about 30 years and always liked it. To me Guns and Ammo has always been kind of so-so. They have both at times seemed to be quite heavy on the tactical anything side.
Shooting Times to me at least seems to be getting back to what they used to be.
To me some old habits die hard so I will likely stay with Shooting Times till either they or me pass away.
Just my opinion is all.
