5th paragraph here RP.

"that hammer spur style on your revolver is known as the "Speed Hammer" and was developed by Smith & Wesson to aid in thumb cocking the revolver for single-action use. It greatly increases thumb purchase on the spur over the older and more graceful ( but less positive in use) pre-war hammer spur style and made single-action cocking much more positive and speedy. The "Speed Hammer" was introduced simultaneously with Smith & Wesson's new "short-action" lock work which gave a shorter lock time from the break of the trigger sear to the ignition of the primer. This was accomplished by reconfiguring the hammer on it's anchoring pin so the fall was shorter. All this was a "big deal" in its day."

Wonderful firearm gw, one of the very best of breed imo. ;)

This is a 5 screw. Monty, I'll get serial # to you tomorrow.

Greg

Thanks, Greg.

I noticed the 5th screw in your photo - that's why I asked about the serial number.

Monty

Edit: P.S. Just noticed that you were responding to Hank and to me. Sorry!

Really nice Pre-17 S&W. I sold one about 5 years ago that was very similar. Ser. #K96424. Best shooting .22 I have ever owned. If I remember correctly, I got more than $750 for it back then. This is a great deal on this very collectible revolver. Not to mention how good it will shoot. Good luck with your sale Greg. If it don't sell on here you should try Smith and Wesson Forum.

If I'm not mistaken, that serial number equates with a 1948 production date.

Thanks for posting that, Greg.

Nice gun - good luck -

Monty

Sold my 1953 super clean K-22 for $750.00 these are examples of a time when craftsmanship and caring about a product reigned in America. They are fantastic, good luck with the sale. sa
