Nita and I decided that today would be the time for our first visit to the new Bass Pro shop in Memphis. For the benefit of those who don't know, the old Pyramid on the Memphis riverfront, originally built as a basketball stadium, has been made into Bass Pro's showcase store. Grand Opening crowds and Memphis in May crowds sort of kept us from it until now. We went there this morning, and were WOWed beyond belief.

There are shops within the shop, plus a simulated cypress swam. There are ponds with fish and ducks, plus three alligators. The sound of the waterfall lends a real outdoorsy feeling, plus rock craigs with m ountain goats, big horn sheep, and bears. Ducks Unlimited has a fantastic display of carved ducks, paintings, shotguns (first time I ever saw a 4 ga. shotgun) boats, etc. There they have both men's and women's clothing and boots, Tracker boats, and all sort of four wheelers. Young kids climb on and "drive" them at will. There is a hotel with a gas fired fireplace in each room, and a private balcony overlooking the cypress swamp.

If you live within driving distance of Memphis, I can certainly suggest a visit. And above all, bought the first can of HS-6 powder I've seen in two years or more.

Anyway, .... when I first moved to the Ozarks in 1978, all Johnny had was a tackle shop in a small strip mall next to a "Builder's Square" store. An American success story for sure.

I do wish Bass Pro and Cabelas would open up stores here in Tucson. We only have Sportsmans Warehouse. I absolutely refuse to drive up to that freeway nightmare up in the Phoenix area. Besides I don't feel like driving 240 miles round trip indent find what I'm looking for. :x

We have one opening here in Round Rock on June 10th, has a bowling alley in it. Huge place, I will give it a week to let the crowd thin out, then see what it is all about. Closest one now is in San Antonio, not worth the drive for me. I suspect it will be a lot like Cabela's, lots of overpriced stuff that you can fondle and then get online for less.

A new Bass Pro recently opened in Atlantic City, about 50 miles from here. It is a smaller store than the one in Harrisburg, PA, and I'm sorry to say that I wasn't impressed. For starters, there is a $10. parking fee, refundable on a purchase of $50. or more. Bad location, as well. But I'm sure they're trying to cater to the "casino crowd". I hope it is a success for Bass Pro, but I'm sticking with Cabela's.

When we go to Branson MO.
We always have to go to the Bass Pro in Springfield, MO. What a fantastic place. They also have a buffet that is called the Hemingway that is outstanding and cheap.
We have a Bass Pro about 4 miles from me. I go there very seldom.
The Bass Pro in Branson is very nice with a good restaurant on the river.
