he was prohibited from owning a gun so I'd guess a true bad guy weapons seller to the cartels, mobs gangs or whatever you call them. 17 machine guns and 20 silencers probably all illegal.

If you look at the picture there are old type guns in the collection which are not much use to a gunrunner.

It seems they were all 'illegal' because he had become a 'prohibited' person... the one thing I find strange is they did not list the person's name.

Sure would be nice to know both sides of the story. The article is a pretty sad case of reporting on weapon type and what law was broken. Assault weapons were found, are they class 3?

A friend has all of what is listed. Are they illegal, NO WAY.
My neighbor who has now passed had a huge collection of WWII German full autos including belt feds that were all legal.

More likely a collection assembled by this person's dad or grandad years ago. Probably 100% legal at the time, even in CA. Prohibited child or grandchild became the custodian. Friend or acquaintance ratted them out.
I think I read in the long convoluted story that he had 'become' a prohibited person.. perhaps this means the guns became 'illegal' when he did something that then made him prohibited...
To speculate:
Something like getting in a final argument with his soon to be ex-wife and shoving her during that and admitting to domestic abuse just to get out of court.

My friend is a local FFL that does contract work for the Police Department and Sheriff's Department where this happened and he gave me some background to this case a few days ago.
The man who this stuff belonged to is in his 90s and a relative of his had to obtain legal guardianship over the man because he is suffering from advanced dementia which is why he is no longer legally allowed to possess firearms.
The man has not lived in the house where his collection was stored for the better part of 6 years because he's living in a nursing home.
The majority of the firearms have been owned for more than 40 years well before they were ever regulated in California and the man has possessed a special federal firearms license called a Curios and Relic license for the better part of 60 years that allowed him under California law to possess machine guns.
The actual machine guns that were in the man's possession are ones that are legally owned and are registered with the NFA and the tax has been paid on them. The authorities have been well aware of what was in his possession because he registered them with the state when they required it.
They're simply pretending like this man is a criminal once they found out he was no longer mentally fit to possess the firearms and gleefully seized his Collection.

Good old liberal play , never tell all the facts .
Infuriating. This could have been handled quietly with security put in place and an auction to dispose of this collection to the proper collectors. The money could have gone to the family or other organizations. This had to be approved by Richard Cranium
well I sure guessed that wrong. Even sadder here is the guardian likely would have been notified, knew or should have know to sell or transfer these guns as soon as possible after the person because incapacitated, Time for a good lawyer to at least not lose the value.
I'm sure the lawyers will figure it out eventually. I certainly wouldn't put my trust in a comment below one of the stories.
Sounds about right to me... just Media hype for sure.... I doubt it will happen but it would behoove the police to figure out who actually owns all that property or should inherit.

In the article it said the county sheriff would be destroying all the confiscated guns.... I wrote the sheriff a letter of complaint about this and he wrote back that the article was wrong and that his department was doing all they could to find the owners of the guns and if they could not then the remaining ones would be auctioned off along with any other items not claimed.

Holy crap; the media strikes once again. I posted it originally because the story sounded like this guy was some kind of nutcase. Now the TRUE story is told. It truly ticks me off that it was originally presented in the manner it was. Thanks bigbillyboy for tell the real story.

I grew up as a kid in San Francisco California. Until 1959 or 1960, even the semi auto M1 Carbine was considered a "machine gun" and was forbidden to us peons. I'm thinking late 1959 because I bought one early 1960. I even took a deer with it labor Dat weekend 1960 just one month before I entered the USAF. Full auto, AFAIK have always been illegal in California but from what early date I don't know. AFAIK, you couldn't even have one as part of a collection.

I perused the photo several times & was about 110% sure that it was a collection. None of the BS that the media or the net was trying to conjure up. I didn't even bother to say this then as then seed was set & minds were spinning with every theory that could be spun. Cartels, mafia, invasion, militia, you name it.
