About two miles due east of my place is a strange old lava formation known as Smith Rock.

It is a famous place for rock climbers.

I believe it is the remnants of a really ancient volcano vastly preceding those in the local Cascades, which are basically brand new.

I Googled Smith Rock yesterday and discovered it was the location for much of the shooting of the movie "Rooster Cogburn". As these things always seem to happen, that movie was on TV this morning. Sure enough there was Smith Rock.

Joe, I am not certain. I turned on the TV maybe 45 minutes into the film just before JW and company took to the raft.

Also, the saloon where the bad guys were hanging out was built very near Smith Rock for the movie. It is still there, I will take some photos and post.

It's neat to see John Wayne movies where the landscape and/or terrain is identifiable to places in Oregon. Whenever I do see terrain or vegetation that I recognize, I pay particular attention to the credits at the end, just to make sure it was in fact, filmed here.

WAYNO.

Folks come from all over the world to clim at Smith Rocks. Watching some of those human flys makes me woozey just seeing some of them plastered on the rock faces. It is also a great place to watch raptors as the birds love the cliffs and the thermals.

The wife and I looked at two farms within a few miles of the rocks but selling our place first is the sticker. If it sold, I'd be over there in a heartbeat!

I strongly suspect that this structure is the Saloon Batjac built for the movie.

We drive through Terrebonne 'bout six times a year while traveling to California to visit an elderly relative. Have always admired the landscapes we see in the general area. Guess we will have to stop and smell the roses next imte through, things like this should not be passed by.
