big lake alaska
Seems like we all had a pretty bad week of bad news from around the USA and the world. pure madness all round us. One of our forum members made me this Christmas Manger out of Alaskan Walrus Ivory. we placed it on our fireplace at our lake house. we just love it. I just thought I share. Thanks Rob.

Pretty cool, but when I read your post title before seeing the 'Walrus' part I was going to point out how politically incorrect it was.
I actually had a pretty good week... but then I do my best not to watch the news.
Got the roof rebuilt on the front of our house finally.. only been 14 months.

im not sure what politically incorrect your talking about. there's nothing there, stop trying to find something that don't exist.

Beautiful work and an outstanding home display.

My Dad collected these walrus ivory pieces when he was stationed at Fort Richardson 1940-43.
It includes a 3 piece carving set with scrimshawed ivory handles.
The two standing Polar Bears are salt & pepper shakers.
My brother (the infant in the family photo) who was born there owns them now.

Me thinks he thought it was elephant ivory. African elephant ivory is illegal. As of today I am not sure about ivory from Asian elephant but40 or so years ago you needed documents that proved any ivory, at least elephant ivory, was Asian Elephant (I went to China when I was in college, and we were told to make sure we got those documents. Not that the documents could not have been a lie). I think that was his point.

I beleve your way off course on the one, his point was not about ivory whats so ever. not even close. as far as elephant ivory, it is not illegal to own, its illegal to import at this point in time. that changes as much as the "winds blows". if your or his point was correct, it would be moot do to it being walrus ivory. if my suspicions are correct. ask yourself this question, what's politically incorrect about about ivory? the answer is? drum roll please. nothing.

Thanks for sharing that. With all the craziness going on, it’s nice to see something peaceful and meaningful. Enjoy it and have a Merry Christmas.
