Son finally got a first hand visual of crop maturity progress yesterday. He hadn't seen our fields for several days and apparently, did not believe what I was telling him. The drought has changed things drastically over the past week. Suddenly, it's no longer "we maybe need to get started prepping for harvest" to "we need to be ready to go in 2 weeks".
I've been pushing for the last couple of weeks to get things done and field ready but he just keeps starting an unending string of odd jobs that seem to take forever and nothing is easy or goes as planned. I know I'm slow but that only means starting sooner and staying on track.
This week is mostly allocated to work stuff. I'm going to be checking fields from one end of my territory to the other this week (that's 2 days on the road minimum) and he's heading for NW Iowa/Eastern NE for most of the week.
I just have to try not to get too pushy or growly at these tense times. Not easy for sure. When I was working a full time job and farming, I could take a 1/2 day, a day, or a week off with one simple phone call. That was a huge advantage during busy times. Now, my schedule is flexible but structured and sometimes I just have to be working.
