A while back I decided to downsize and sell guns that I would never use (thanks to all here who have bought them) and I would instead get some guns that I would actually shoot (thanks to those who sold me a couple of guns on my list). I decided that I wanted an AR and the AR556 was affordable at $545 AND it was a Ruger. I tried to get one on here, but it didn't work out for some reason. Anyway I ordered one 3 weeks ago. They called yesterday and said it was in. I can't get it until Monday due to work and the road conditions, and I'm hoping the state gets the roads cleared of this 12" of snow and now 1/2" of ice on top of that mess. I'm just really excited; I know from reading here that it is a cheap (base) model or whatever; but I just want it to occasionally play with.

Congrats!

Ruger may have hit a home run with that gun. I've heard more than one guy say they were never really interested in the AR platform before BUT ..... for well under $600.00 and the Ruger name .... now's the time.

I had one "pre ordered" for almost 4 months.. Never got it.
Seems they had early problems getting them out to dealers with the new factory and all, but now they are starting to show up everywhere.
The day before I got my money back, I got a flyer from Gander Mtn.
They were all excited to announce the new Ruger AR556 for (choke choke) $699.00.
I stopped going there some time ago and will never look back.
All the reviews I have read are great and it seems they have a few innovative features as well.
I was going to just get a different rifle or a mini 14, but I think I will just wait for this one.

I picked it up this morning. Took it home and headed to work at noon. It looks really good, especially for the money. Do you guys that have these do a 1-shot-and-clean break-in for 10 rounds, then fire 10 rounds-and-clean for the next 90 rounds? I read that a while back somewhere. Is that how it is supposed to be broken in? Thanks.

I understood that some folks break in a SS barrel, but I've never heard of anyone with a steel barrel doing any kind of break in. Others may have different experiences...

Shows what I know. I read about breaking in barrels somewhere; I didn't know specifically what the article was referring to. Thanks for the clarification. I just need some above 20* temps and this snow to get off the ground so I can try my new Ruger out.
